Liturgical Year and Calendar of the Saints |
|
The liturgical year begins with Advent, which is a time of preparation for the celebration of Jesus' birth, and also for his second coming. The Christmas season begins with first Vespers of Christmas Eve and ends with the feast of the Baptism of Jesus. Lent is a time of repentance and conversion beginning on Ash Wednesday and ending on Holy Thursday. The Mass of the Lord's Supper on Holy Thursday begins the Easter Triduum which includes Good Friday, Holy Saturday and Easter Sunday. The Easter season continues for seven weeks ending with Pentecost which celebrates the descent of the Holy Spirit after Jesus' Ascension. The rest of the liturgical year is called Ordinary Time. During the Liturgical year there is also a cycle of dates on which we remember particular saints. This list may vary slightly according to country or local devotions. The list of saints included here is from a Benedictine calendar and contains some Benedictine saints not found in your Missalette. |
