Who are the Knights?
The Knights of Columbus is an international Catholic men's fraternal and family
service organization over a hundred years old and 1.5 million members strong.
We were formed in New Haven Connecticut by Father Michael J. McGivney in
1882 to ease the suffering of fellow Catholics and to strengthen our own faith.
We support the Church, its clergy, and its teachings.
The principles that we follow are Charity, Unity, Fraternity, and Patriotism. Our
organization is broken down by jurisdictions that in the United States follow State
lines. Those jurisdictions are further divided into Districts which are composed
of several councils each. Councils are the local chapters of the Knights of
Columbus and are where the bulk of the charitible work of the Knights is accomplished.
Most councils support one or more parishes and we strive to be an integral and
invaluable source of manpower for ministry in our faith communities. Our council
of about 90 men serves and consists of parishioners from St. Francis of Assisi and
St. Luke the Evangelist parishes in western and northern Raleigh.
We meet for business meetings on the first Tuesday of each month at 8PM in Clare
Hall at St. Francis. Knights from other councils are welcome to attend, all
you need is your current traveling (membership) card. Members are Catholic
Gentlemen aged 18 years or over.

Operation LAMB raises money for the support and care of mentally retarded children.
Operation LAMB (from "...whatsoever you do to the Least Among My Brethern, that you
do also to me." Matt. 25:40) is one the largest charitble programs of the Knights of
Columbus. The Tootsie Roll campaign raises money for distribution to organizations in the
Raleigh area and facilities around the state that have no local councils. The annual
Tootsie Roll Drive for Raleigh is held in September and October.

These are just some of the activities we are involved in:
- St. Francis Parking Ministry - members of the council coordinate and recruit
volunteer parking ministers, setup signs and cones to promote safety in entering and
exiting the parking lot, and help to direct traffic at regular masses and special
occassions.
- St. Francis Parish Picnic support - members direct traffic, cook, and run bingo
games
- Altar Server appreciation picnics for children from St. Luke and St. Francis.
- Free Throw Contest - We hold an annual basketball free throw contest, usually in
January, for boys and girls ages 10-14
- Parish Cleanups - We supply a large portion of the manpower needed at least four
times a year to keep the grounds of St. Francis looking beautiful
- Social Events - We make sure to take time to relax and have fun at events like
our Ice Caps Hockey nights, Comedy club outings, Christmas parties, and family picnics
- Keep Christ in Christmas - We believe it is incredibly important to keep in mind
that Christmas is about the coming of Jesus into our world and try to encourage reflection
in a joyous season that can ironically put a heavy burden on us all.
- Right to Life activities - We work closely with the Right to Life communities in
our parishes to promote respect for life in all its stages.

The Knights not only assist people in their own parishes but also in the
local and international community.

Wheelchair donation - In the fall of 1997 Council 9709 donated a wheelchair to
Ronald David Juarez, shown above with his mother Hilda. His previous wheelchair was also
donated by the council but had outlived its use. This wheelchair was selected for its
durability and should serve David well for many years to come. Ronald and Hilda live in
Nicaragua
Scouts sponsorship - The Council supports Boy scout and Cub Scout troops at St.
Luke and St. Francis. We are the sponsor for the St. Francis Cub Scout Pack 352 and Boy
Scout Troop 352.
Seminarian Support - We are proud to donate money to local men studying to join the
priesthood, including our own fellow Knight Scott Del Pozzo. Scott is currently going
through the Affiliate program of the Franciscan Order of Friars Minor, Holy Name Province.
Sister Parish Support - Council Members generously supported Past Grand Knight John
Guenther when he joined the 8th Sister Parish Delegation to Las Margaritas, Guatemala in
February 1998. Their financial and spiritual support was vital to his ability to make this
journey.
HEC Sponsors - The Council is a sponsor of the 1998 Handicapped Encounter Christ
Volleyball Tournament. The Tournament is put on by the Diocese of Raleigh's Young Adult
Ministry and allows handicapped individuals to experience a great weekend retreat at the
Short Journey Center in Smithfield.
