In 1958 Father Thomas Butler was appointed by Archbishop Joseph E. Ritter to
establish a parish on 14 acres of land located on Union Road near Bayless Road.
Most of the land in the area had been farms until shortly before this time.
Father Butler obtained the use of American Legion Post #300 on Heege Road for
Sunday Mass. He purchased a house at 4336 Kay Lane to be used as a rectory.
Ground-Breaking ceremonies for a combination church and school were held in the
fall of 1958 and the cornerstone was laid on June 7,1959.
On October 11, 1959, Archbishop Ritter presided at the dedication Mass which was
followed by an open house and dinner. The school opened the following day as did
the school cafeteria. The school was staffed entirely by lay teachers.
The spring of 1960 marked the first graduating class, the first First Communion
class and the first school picnic. In 1960, the Sisters of Charity of the Blessed
Virgin Mary came to help staff the school. The Sisters moved into the house that
had been used as a rectory at 4336 Kay Lane and the priests moved to a house on
the corner of Union and Dar Lane. A convent was built next to the church/school
building in about 1961 and the rectory was built in 1962. A portable building was
erected to serve as a classroom.
In 1963 approximately 3.5 acres of the parish property was sold for the construction
of Interstate Highway 55.
The 1960's marked years of change in the Church. In the years following Vatican
Council II, the role of the laity was changing to one of more active participation.
In June of 1967, Father Butler was transferred to Valley Park and Father Joseph
Cronin was appointed pastor of St. Timothy's. He was instrumental in establishing
the Parish Council and leading it through its growth stage. During his tenure as
pastor, the air-conditioning was added and the Resource Center addition was
constructed. The portable building was no longer needed.
In June of 1972 Father Cronin retired and entered Regina Cleri. Father Norbert
Dietz was appointed pastor of the parish. Father Dietz was made an Honorary
Prelate (Monsignor) on February 24, 1977. Father Dietz initiated many liturgical
changes in the parish involving more of the laity. Through careful budgeting
for the needs of the parish, the parish debt was erased in 1981.
Bishop Edward O'Meara ordained Frank Blood to the priesthood in the parish church
on June 30, 1979. On October 18, 1980, Peter Cerneka became the first permanent
deacon ordained for service in this parish.
In June 1981, Msgr. Dietz was transferred to Incarnate Word Parish in Chesterfield
and Father Harold Voelker was appointed Pastor. The Parish Council was
re-structured and the ball field was renovated. More steps forward were taken in
liturgical up-date with more men and women becoming involved in the various
liturgical ministries. The last of the Sisters of Charity left the parish in 1982.
Because of ill health, Father Voelker resigned and Father George Hendel was
appointed pastor in June, 1983. During his tenure the statues of the Sacred Heart
and the Blessed Mother were placed in front of the church. Minor renovations were
made in the interior of the school. The School Sisters of Notre Dame began using
the convent as a residence and as part of their postulancy program. Philip Caruana
was ordained a permanent deacon for service at St. Timothy's in 1985.
Father Hendel was granted a leave of absence by Archbishop May in April 1985.
Father Walter Keutzer arrived as pastor in June of that year. Robert Smerek
was ordained a permanent deacon in 1986.
Father Keutzer returned to military service in 1989. Father David A. Walter
was appointed Pastor. Sister Maureen Streitmiller, CSJ, already on the parish
staff, was appointed Pastoral Associate in 1990. Sr. Maureen left in 1996.
She was replaced by Mrs. Diana Alferink. Deacon Eugene Hoffmann was also
appointed to serve St. Timothy Parish in 1990. The School Sisters of Notre
Dame moved from the parish convent in the summer of 1990. Since this time,
the building has been used for parish offices, meetings and activities.
Deacon Robert Smerek was reassigned to another parish in 1991. Father Edward
J. Stanger was ordained by Archbishop May in January 1991. Father Steve Robeson
was transferred from St. Timothy in June of 1993. In his place, Father James
Komaska was assigned to serve at St. Timothy as Senior Priest. On May 30, 1998,
Father Ted Vitali, C.P., celebrated the 29th Anniversary of his Priesthood
Ordination. Father Ted has been connected to St. Tim's for over 20 years.
Fr. Komaska left St. Timothy's in 1996 and was replaced by Fr. Bryan Kuchar,
who left the parish in 1997. Fr. Walter left St. Timothy's in March, 1998
and was replaced in April, 1998 by the current pastor, Fr. Patrick K. Hambrough.
Over the years many dedicated priests and sisters have served the parish.
However, the commitment and dedication of the men, women and children of
St. Timothy's has made this parish a loving, caring community of faith. We
ask God's blessing on all those who have been a part of this parish and those
who will carry on the traditions of the parish.
