FRIAR'S MIND

THE MILLENNIUM

We have begun 1998 Anno Domini, the nineteenth hundred and ninety eighth year of Our Lord. While every New Year is a landmark, the year 2000 will be a very special moment, the beginning of the third millennium anniversary of the birth of Christ.

In preparation for this special moment, the church has designated the three years preceding the millennium as a time of renewal to fully appreciate its significance.

1997 was the year of "Converting to Jesus." The theme of the year was Christ, the Son. The sacramental focus was Baptism.

1998 is the year of "Unity in the Holy Spirit." The theme of the year is the Holy Spirit. The sacramental focus is Confirmation.

1999 will be the year of "Serving the Father." The theme will be God the Father. The sacramental focus will be Penance.

Our archdiocese is observing these three years with special services and suggested devotional practices. You might recall that last year everyone was invited to visit the church of their baptism as a spiritual pilgrimage.

The celebration of this year of the Holy Spirit will begin on January 11, the Feast of The Baptism of the Lord, with Solemn Vespers and Benediction at the Cathedral Basilica. This will be a special year for all who are receiving the sacrament of confirmation. The suggested personal devotion for this year is the reading of the Acts of the Apostles, "the Gospel of the Holy Spirit." A special edition of the Acts of the Apostles will be made available to you along with a prayer card for Year II of our millennium preparations.

The millennium can be a special moment of grace, if we are prepared to receive it.
