FRIARS' MIND

When February 2 lands on Sunday, we celebrate the Feast of the Lord's Presentation instead of the Sunday in Ordinary Time. That happens this year. The feast day has a nickname, Candlemas Day, because it is the traditional time for blessing candles.

Next Sunday, a small table will be set up in the front of church. If you have any candles you would like to have blessed, bring them to Mass and place them on that small table. At the beginning of each Mass, we will bless the candles. The blessing also extends to the red and blue vigil light candles stored in the sacristy that are burned throughout the year.

Burning candles remind us of Christ, who is the Light of the World. He guides us along the path of life and gives us the security of knowing we are going to God. Candles are also symbols of our prayers that rise to heaven.

May the Lord Jesus, who was presented to his Father in the Temple on this fortieth day since Christmas, be ready to present us to the Father.

Is Candlemas Day. Bring your candles to Mass to be blessed and place them on the table in front of church.

Bring your old palms to be burned for Ash Wednesday either next Sunday, February 2, or February 9, and place them in baskets in back of church.
