IMMACULATE CONCEPTION BULLETIN
February 2, 1997
FRIARS' MIND
This Sunday, February 2, is the Feast of the Presentation
of the Lord in the temple. It is a final echo of
Christmas since the presentation of the child was also the
required legal purification of Mary, His mother, forty days
after His birth.
This feast is also known as Candlemas Day since there
is a special blessing of candles at Mass. The custom of
blessing candles today is taken from the canticle of Simeon
at the presentation when he prophesied that the Christ child
would be "a light for revelation to the nations." (Lk 2:32)
Monday, February 3, is the feast of St. Blase with
the traditional blessing of throats. St. Blase was a
fourth century bishop in Turkey. Legend credits him with
saving the life of a boy who was choking to death (the first
Heimlich maneuver?) This ancient blessing of throats is
both a prayer and promise: a petition for God to safeguard
our health; a pledge to take responsible care of our body.
The blessing does no good unless you wear your scarf!
There is also a secular observance today which rounds out
this beginning of the month of February. Today, February 2,
is Groundhog's Day. The famous groundhog, Punxsutawney
Phil, will come out of his burrow this morning in
Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania, just a few miles north of
Pittsburgh! If the sun is shining and he sees his shadow
there will be six more weeks of winter; if skies are
overcast and he does not see his shadow there will be an
early spring. This is neither scientific fact nor a
liturgical feast, but after the arctic January we have
endured, many are praying for cloudy skies over western
Pennsylvania this morning.

ST. BLASE BLESSING OF THROATS
Monday, February 3, is the feast of St. Blase. The
blessing of throats will be held after the 7 am & 8 am
Masses and at 2:30 p.m.
FIRST FRIDAY ADORATION
This Friday, February 7, there will be adoration of the
Blessed Sacrament following the 8:00 a.m. Mass until 7:00
a.m. Saturday morning. Sign up for an hour of prayer.
I. C. TOMORROW

Payment Sunday. I.C. Tomorrow note pads are
