FRIARS' MIND
Make Lent Personal
The Church is going to observe Lent this year, as it
always does, but what about me? I could continue my life
the way I always do, and think about Lent only at the
weekend Mass. Or I could just go along, doing what I
believe I have to. The third possibility is to use this
opportunity and seriously make lent a part of my life this
year.
This third choice will take a little planning
beforehand. If I wait until we're into the first or second
week of Lent before even thinking about it, I probably won't
do anything.
Let's start with what the Church asks us to do. It's
pretty simple. All Catholics 14 years and older should
abstain from meat on Ash Wednesday and the Fridays of Lent.
And people between 21 and 60 years of age must fast on two
days: Ash Wednesday and Good Friday. Fasting means eating
only one full meal, with two smaller meals allowed: and no
eating between meals.
If these are impossible to keep, one is excused of
course. In doubt, consult your pastor.
But there should be something else we choose to do,
something that is our own, that fits our spiritual needs,
and has a little bite to it. Here are just a few
suggestions: Stations of the Cross each Friday; weekday
Mass several times each week; reading a spiritual book,
perhaps instead of TV; giving up that beer or cocktail
before dinner cutting back on smoking; offering to Rice Bowl
from self-denial; taking on one chore around the house;
keeping calm in traffic; more patience with the kids and
more time with them.
You can probably come up with something that fits your
needs even better. Let this holy season draw us closer to
God.

LENTEN REGULATIONS
Ash Wednesday and Good Friday are days of abstinence
from meat for all Catholics over age 14. Fast as well
as abstinence is obligatory for those from ages 18 to 59.
Fast means one full meal a day, with two other small meals
and nothing between meals. All Fridays of Lent are days of
abstinence from meat. Catholics should not lightly excuse
themselves from these obligations, but if there is a serious
health problem these obligations do not apply.

A LETTER FROM THE ARCHBISHOP
Dear Friends in Christ,
On Ash Wednesday, February 12, we begin the Lenten
journey that reminds us of the importance of personal
purification and continued rediscovery of the presence of
the Lord in our lives.
In this journey of forty days, we are reminded of
individuals and peoples in so many parts of the world who
find themselves in difficult situations. I invite you to
reflect on ways in which you may take practical steps to
stand in solidarity with the poor.
May the Lord grant us a spirit of prayer, penance and
peace on our way to Easter.
Sincerely yours in Christ,
Most Reverend Justin Rigali
Archbishop of St. Louis
