FRIARS' MIND

In last Wednesday's Post Dispatch Bill McClellan told of an experience he had last summer that merits retelling. He and a friend were on a boating trip. They were on the Illinois River heading north to Lake Michigan.

At one point they realized they were running low on gas. At the town of Havana they brought their boat to shore and got out, intending to walk--they didn't know how far--to the nearest service station. It turned out to be more than a mile away. Soon they came upon a construction site, where the workers were taking their lunch break. They visited a while, and one of the workers said, "take my car. It will be a long walk back with those gas tanks full." And he handed them his keys.

Bill said, "You don't even know us! You're giving us your car keys?"

"Why not?" the worker answered. Bill McClellan and his friend drove to the nearest service station, filled their tanks, and returned to the construction site. No one was surprised.

McClellan wrote that this incident was the best memory he had of the entire trip. He wrote: "Take my truck....It represents the world as it should be."
