FRIARS' MIND

Next Sunday, the fourth Sunday of Lent, is known as Laetare Sunday. "Laetare," Latin for "rejoice," is the first word of the entrance antiphon of that Mass.
This year the Archdiocese will observe Laetare Sunday as a day of pilgrimage to the church of one's baptism, in preparation for the observance of the millennium, 2000 AD.
Why a pilgrimage to the church of one's baptism this Laetare Sunday? Throughout 1997, the first year of a three-year preparation for the millennium, the church is focusing on Jesus Christ, the virtue of Faith, and the sacrament of Baptism.
All Catholics are invited to make a pilgrimage to their church of baptism next Sunday to thank God for the gift of their Catholic faith and to recommit themselves to their faith with a view to the coming millennium, 2000 AD. Those who are unable to return to their church of baptism are encouraged to make their pilgrimage to their present parish church or the Cathedral of St. Louis.
Churches throughout the archdiocese will be open from the morning Masses until 5:00 pm. The baptismal font will be on display, there will be a guest book and prayer leaflet. There are prayer leaflets available in the back of our church for you to take with you.
Our parish was founded in 1840. The early baptisms were recorded at the Cathedral. The first baptism in our register was on June 15, 1843, when Father G. P. Fischer baptized George Reinhalt Koenig, son of David Koenig and Marie Anne Ems. The Godparents were George and Anne Marie Ems. Do you know the church, date, priest and sponsors for your own baptism?

"Rejoice" in your baptism this Laetare Sunday!

Frs. Earl & Gilmary

Fr. Earl and the Finance Committee have granted us the loose collections for the 5th Sundays of the month when they occur. In 1997, those months will be March, June, August and November. We ask that you help us through these collections. Individual contributions may still be made through the envelopes provided and we will give receipts for taxes when requested. We hope this will provide a substantial revenue base for our work in helping the needy in our area with rent, utility bills, pharmacy, food, gasoline and any other needs they may have.
