FRIARS' MIND

Next week there will be a lot of hoopla for St. Patrick's Day. That's always a lot of fun, although it has little to do with Ireland and even less to do with St. Patrick.
What is almost lost every year is the observance of St. Joseph Feast, two days later. How did this feast day come about? Why March 19? We don't know. In fact, we don't even have any good theories. The earliest mention of a remembrance of Joseph is from the eight century; the date is March 20. Shortly thereafter numerous places held his feast on March 19.
Actually, a lot was written about Joseph in the second century. But it was in those so-called "gospels" that were notoriously unreliable and were finally rejected by the Church and unauthentic. So for many centuries after that Joseph was pretty well ignored.
All that was changed. St. Joseph now is an ideal saint for our times. He is the patron of families; that's where we first learn our faith and practice it daily. He is the patron of workers, all those who have a job and have to work for a living. He is the patron of fathers, roughly about half the adult population. Dads need a special heavenly patron in these difficult times. Joseph was also proclaimed patron of the Universal Church by Pope Leo XIII, who said it was because he represented the people of the Church "scattered throughout all lands," in all different occupations, situations, and roles. That's all of us.
As a kid, I was fascinated at the ways the nuns were always praying to St. Joseph for something. Why did they have such personal devotion to Joseph, I wondered. Whatever the reason, it worked.

St. Joseph, pray for us.

Frs. Earl & Gilmary
