IMMACULATE CONCEPTION BULLETIN
July 6, 1997
FRIARS' MIND
How much religion do we take with us on vacation? We
ought to be just as good Catholics when traveling and on
vacations as we are at home. But on vacation we do most
other things differently, so the ways we express our Faith
may be somewhat different too.
A lot of time is spent in the car. There is always
some danger because of heavy traffic, unfamiliar roads, and
long hours. It's a good idea to have a religious object in
the car, a statue, medal or picture, just to remind us to
put ourselves in God's care. Prayers said together, like
the rosary, is an excellent way to create a proper mood when
traveling. It also keeps the kids quiet for a while and
helps pass the time.
At our destination we ought to try to have at least
one prayer together each day, perhaps at a meal or the last
thing at night. Sometimes this may not be practical because
of people we are with. No point in being obnoxious by
trying to push religion down other people's throat. But
when it is just our family, there should be no problem.
Now Sunday Mass. We do have the obligation to attend
liturgy every Sunday, even when away from home. So we ought
to make some effort to find out where a Catholic church is
and impossible or extremely difficult. If we miss Mass in
cases like that, we do not commit a sin, so it's nothing to
worry about. In other words we do the best we can without
being scrupulous.
On vacation fun and family come first. But God is
part of all fun and every family.
