IMMACULATE CONCEPTION BULLETIN

FRIAR'S MIND
PICNIC SUNDAY
Today is our annual parish picnic. The parish records do
not indicate precisely when the tradition of an annual
picnic began, but the picnic is mentioned in the 1917
diamond jubilee booklet of the parish. So 1997 is at least
the 80th picnic, in a tradition which surely goes back much
further.
While we continue a rich tradition today, we are also
aware that it is a living tradition which we enrich with our
own efforts. Perhaps the most innovative feature of this
year's picnic will be Baked Chicken along with the
traditional Fried Chicken. Souvenirs made from the church's
original 1895 pipe organ will be on sale; there are more
carnival rides than ever and many new games have been added
for children (of all ages) including miniature golf, hockey
shot, and a book walk. There will be a Live Auction of a
grand variety of practical items from 4-5 pm.
The Main Raffle this year is for a total of $1,000.00
with individual prizes of $600.00, $300.00 and $100.00.
Tickets are still available and the prize may be less, but
the odds far better than the lottery!
Workers are still needed in some areas. Check with Sue
Steidel, our courageous picnic president. Come on out and
be part of a grand tradition.

ARCHDIOCESE OF SAINT LOUIS
150th ANNIVERSARY
Today, July 20, 1997, is the 150th anniversary of the
archdiocese of St. Louis. St. Louis was established as a
diocese on July 18, 1826 and elevated to the status of an
archdiocese on July 20, 1847. Bishop Peter Kenrick was its
first archbishop.
At that time the boundaries of the archdiocese extended
far beyond the state of Missouri. Some 18 new diocese and
archdioceses have since been established within the original
territory of the diocese of St. Louis. In 1850 the boundary
of the archdiocese was reduced to the State of Missouri and
in 1956 again adjusted to include the 10 counties
surrounding the city of St. Louis.
At present the Archdiocese of St. Louis numbers 227
parishes and 8 missions. There are 864 priests including
383 religious (12 are Capuchins), 208 permanent deacons, 190
brothers (2 are Capuchins), 2416 sisters, 29 high schools
and 155 elementary schools, all serving a Catholic
population of 558,800.
Happy Sesquicentennial to our archdiocese of St. Louis!

A SUMMER SMILE
A Franciscan priest was trying to enjoy a ball game,
but the man next to him kept asking personal questions
about his life. When the priest ordered a hot dog, the
vendor handed it to the man who handed it to the priest.
The hot dog went from the prying fan into the friar.

A LETTER FROM THE ARCHBISHOP
Dear Faithful of the Archdiocese of St. Louis,
Today is a day of rejoicing for the local Church of St.
Louis as we commemorate the one hundred and fiftieth
anniversary of the establishment of St. Louis as an
Archdiocese by Pope Pius IX. Today we celebrate the
Eucharist mindful of all the blessings poured out upon us
through fifteen decades of faithful work and witness by
numerous women and men of faith.
I am grateful to all of you who labor and pray that our
Archdiocese will flourish in the future. As we approach the
Third Millennium of Christianity, may our patron, St. Louis,
and Mary, Mother of the Church, continue to watch over us.
Sincerely yours in Christ,
Most Reverend Justin Rigali
Archbishop of St. Louis
