FRIAR'S MIND

When school bells ring again this week, not only the children but all of us are called again to the challenge of education, in particular Christian religious education.

The Cannon Law of the Church says: "Parents, and those who take their place, have both the obligation and the right to educate their children. Catholic parents have also the duty and the right to choose those means and institutes which, in their local circumstances, can best promote the Catholic education of their children. (Can 793)

The Catechism of the Catholic Church says: "Parents have the first responsibility for the education of their children." (2223) "As those first responsible for the education of their children, parents have the right to choose a school for them which corresponds to their own convictions. This right is fundamental. As far as possible parents have the duty of choosing schools which will best help them in their task as Christian educators." (2229)

"Education in the faith by the parents should begin in the child's earliest years. This happens when the family gives witness of a Christian life in keeping with the Gospel. Parents have the mission of teaching their children to pray and to discover their vocation as children of God. The parish is the Eucharistic community and the heart of the liturgical life of Christian families, a privileged place for the religious education of children and parents."(2226)

As school bells ring again, they are calling all of us anew to the responsibility of a proper education in our faith.

SHARING OUR HOPE

The archdiocesan endowment campaign is now under way and soon you may be invited to participate as a volunteer to help with the process. This is an opportunity to do something bigger and beyond yourself. For example, the largest endowment will be $15,000,000,00 for Catholic education to ensure that such education is available for the coming generations. Annual revenue of more than one million dollars from this endowment will be provide tuition assistance grants and facility improvements. Future parents and students will bless your efforts.
