IMMACULATE CONCEPTION BULLETIN
August 31, 1997
FRIAR'S MIND
This is the time of year when we send kids to their labors
in school, so that they can be prepared for a life of labor
later on. Most kids, full of curiosity and anxious to make
new friends, fall for this trap. By the time they realize
what's going on, it's too late.
We labor all the time (presumably) at our job, most
of the time when we're home, and even part of our vacation
time. Labor is something we can't get out of. This weekend
we observe Labor Day, as if we needed to be reminded. The
only good thing about Labor Day is that we don't have to
labor, at least not at the job.
There are a few people who live their work, can't get
enough of it. Most of us probably figure it's not the best
of all jobs, but we make do. And there are plenty of people
who hate their job, including their boss, their co-workers,
and their meager pay. That last part, the pay, is the
biggest problem of most, I guess. Which was why I'll never
forget what one employee said about a job he liked very
much: "They pay me very well for what I do. Probably too
well." That is something you don't hear often.
So with all these negatives about labor, what is there to
celebrate? Perhaps we can find a reason by considering the
alternative: what kind of a life would it be if we had
nothing to do?
Since we have no alternative, may God bless our labor and
help us to survive and even prosper. Happy Labor Day!
Frs. Earl & Gilmary
