IMMACULATE CONCEPTION BULLETIN
October 5, 1997
FRIAR'S MIND
The recent earthquake damage to the Basilica of St. Francis
in Italy, brought unfortunate but timely attention to the
heritage of St. Francis of Assisi.
Saints are often dismissed as "other-worldly" in the sense
that their life has little practical meaning for a modern
Christian. That cannot be said of St. Francis of Assisi.
Consider these three related areas of modern life to which
the life of St. Francis speaks effectively.
ECOLOGY People of any or no religious faith are
inspired by St. Francis' love of nature. He found not only
the image of God in nature, but also the responsibility to
preserve this gift from God for others.
ECONOMY St. Francis is known as The
Poverello, "the little poor one." His sense of poverty,
detachment from possessions, speaks to our modern insatiable
materialism. How could someone so poor be so rich? What is
our lasting wealth?
ECSTACY Modern life is largely a quest for pleasure.
No one was happier than St. Francis who found joy in simple
things, a sharp contrast to our frenzied pursuit of pleasure
through possessions and indulgence. We have more than any
people have every had, but we are not happier. The greatest
ecstacy of St. Francis was when he shared the wounds of the
crucified Christ, being marked with the sacred stigmata.
St. Francis of Assisi is a saint for our times.
