IMMACULATE CONCEPTION BULLETIN
October 12, 1997
FRIAR'S MIND
Today is Columbus Day. It used to be quite a holiday. I
remember when there was no school this day. Those were the
days when everyone considered Christopher Columbus a great
man, when the discovery of the "New World" by Europeans was
judged a magnificent achievement.
Then popular opinion changed, or rather was changed.
Everyone seemed convinced Columbus was a villain of the
worst kind. And in 1994, the 500th anniversary of the
discovery of America was practically ignored. Poor
Columbus. They told us he brought everything that was bad
in European civilization to the New World, that was getting
along just fine up until then. He favored slavery. He used
religion for profit. He conquered free people in the name
of the Spanish king.
The truth is, we were forcing our mentality and our
attitudes onto people of the fifteenth century. And we were
blaming one man for the sins of many who followed him.
Today most of us favor the extension of American influence
around the world; we have troops in places like Korea and
Bosnia and Kuwait, convinced that we're doing good for those
people. Columbus and Spain did the same thing back in the
fifteenth century.
We should have a kind thought today for a great man, one
of the greatest. It was not just luck, it was his vision
and his bravery that change history as few others have. May
we always have a few like him around.

RETURNING GOD'S GIFTS
SHARING OUR HOPE
Must a volunteer visitor come to my home for my pledge?
A home visit is the most personal and effective way to
present the program, answer your questions and allow you to
make a pledge in the privacy of your own home. If for some
reason you do not want a home visitors, please call the
pastor (296-5289) and he will arrange whatever is agreeable
with you.
What if I cannot afford the Archbishop's request?
It would be a mistake to give nothing because you
cannot at present give what you would like to give. The
most important things is that, as a Catholic of the
Archdiocese of St. Louis, you be a part of this endowment.
By making a gift according to your means you endorse the
work of the church and invest in its future.
