FRIAR'S MIND

A FEMINIST SAINT

Today, Mission Sunday, St. Therese of Lisieux, The Little Flower will be declared a "Doctor of the Church." A doctor of the church is one who has contributed in a significant, scholarly and saintly manner to the understanding of our faith.

The Doctors of the Church include such great saints as Augustine, Thomas Aquinas and Bonaventure. St. Therese of Lisieux, along with St. Theresa of Avila and St. Catherine of Sienna is now the third woman so honored.

St. Therese lived only 24 years, the final nine in the seclusion of a cloistered Carmelite convent. It was the posthumous publication of her diary and personal writings which brought her international fame. In these writings, published under the title of "The Autobiography of St. Therese," she explains her Little Way of serving God and others. It is an inspiring example of a life of gospel humility and service. It is a spiritual classic, "must reading" for anyone interested in the interior life.

St. Therese is being declared a Doctor of the Church today on Mission Sunday because she is one of the two patrons of the missions. The other is St. Francis Xavier, the first foreign missionary of the Jesuit Order, who was an heroic missionary to India and China. St. Therese had a strong desire to work in the foreign missions, but she realized that God wanted her to live in the Carmelite convent, where she prayed each day for missionaries. It was an integral part of her Little Way.

RETURNING GOD'S GIFTS
SHARING OUR HOPE

With all my other commitments, how can I make a pledge to the Archdiocesan Endowment Campaign?
We all have many demanding financial commitments, and need to set priorities among them. In making your decision remember that your pledge is over three years, not an immediate payment. A pledge of one thousand dollars is less than one dollar a day. Also a gift to this campaign is a gift that will continue to give forever for the work of the church, a high priority on any list.

I have not been contacted. How do I make my pledge? If for some reason you have not yet been contacted, you can called the parish office (296-5289) and arrange a convenient time and manner to make your pledge.

A LETTER FROM THE ARCHBISHOP

Dear Friends in Christ,
As we celebrate Mission Sunday on the 150th anniversary of our own Archdiocese we are reminded that the young Church in St. Louis benefitted from the support of Catholics in Europe through the Society for the Propagation of the Faith.
I ask your prayers and financial assistance for our modern day missionaries who work to establish the Church where it is not yet firmly rooted.
Gratefully yours in Christ,

Archbishop Justin Rigali
