IMMACULATE CONCEPTION BULLETIN
October 26, 1997
FRIAR'S MIND
All Souls Day
Next Sunday, 2 November, is the Commemoration of All Souls.
The liturgy of the Mass will be for the Faithful Departed
rather than the 31st Sunday in Ordinary Time.
For many years our parish has had the custom of
placing a burning candle (in the form of a luminaria ) at
each grave. It's altogether proper that we do this. Those
who rest in this sacred ground are the ones who built this
community and this parish. They handed on to us a strong
faith and the good example of their lives. We owe them a
lot.
This custom also reminds us to pray for our departed
family and friends that God give them eternal life. Many of
our parishioners are buried in other places. By decorating
our own cemetery we also honor them. The Cub Scouts are the
ones who have been faithfully doing this for years. It is a
beautiful service for all of us. We deserve a lot of
credit.
A prayer service has been held in the cemetery in
recent years just before these luminaries were lit. This
year, since it is Saturday evening, the lighting of the
candles will be in conjunction with the weekend 5:00 pm
Mass. At the beginning of Mass, a prayer will be said, and
a candle blessed. This candle will then be taken to the
cemetery to light all the others in the cemetery.
Eternal rest grant unto them, O Lord, and let
perpetual light shine upon them.

RETURNING GOD'S GIFTS
SHARING OUR HOPE
Why are Religious Sisters, Brothers and Priests not
included in the endowed retirement fund of this campaign?
Twenty percent of the proposed endowment is for the
retirement needs of the priests of the Archdiocese. This
does not include Sisters, Brothers or Priests of Religious
orders because they are not the responsibility of the
archdiocese but of their own religious congregations. Each
year there is a special collection for the retirement needs
of religious. We Capuchins, for example, will not benefit
from the Archdiocesan Endowment. We are not offended by
this. With our independence comes our own responsibilities.
We support and are contributing to this endowment campaign
of the archdiocese and encourage you to be a part of it.
