IMMACULATE CONCEPTION BULLETIN
November 2, 1997
FRIAR'S MIND
THE POOR SOULS
November is the month of "The Poor Souls," which is the
traditional name for the souls in purgatory who are being
made worthy to enter the glory of heaven.
The term, "The Poor Souls," can be misleading. It is
true that they are "poor" in the sense that they can do
nothing on their own to advance their cause. But they are
anything but "poor" in the sense that they are already
assured of salvation and have the support of the prayers of
the whole church for their speedy purification.
Already in the Old Testament book of Macabees prayers of
atonement were offered for the dead. "It is a holy and
pious thought to pray for the dead that they may be
delivered from their sins." (2 Mac 12:46) From the
beginning the Christian church has honored the memory of the
dead and offered prayers for them, above all the Eucharistic
sacrifice of the Mass, that they may be purified and come to
the beatific vision of God.
We begin this month with the twin feasts of All Saints
Day and All Souls Day to celebrate the "Communion of
Saints," in which all the faithful, in this life and the
next, are united in the grace of God.
Our Catholic tradition of praying for the poor souls,
especially during November, not only helps the departed, but
enriches our own faith through the Communion of Saints. Let
us remember them in our ancient noble custom of observing
November as the month of the Pour Souls.

RETURNING GOD'S GIFTS
SHARING OUR HOPE
How is this campaign doing throughout the archdiocese?
To date the archdiocese has received pledges for
$43.8 million, 80% of the $55 million goal. The average
gift is $1,266. Many parishes have already surpassed their
goal. The present parish average is 87% of its goal.
Why are our fellow Catholics so generous?
What better way to give? A gift to this endowment is
a gift that keeps on giving forever for the good work of the
church. Although the requested gift may seem quite large at
first, it need not be made all at once, but can be arranged
in any convenient manner over three years. "God loves a
cheerful giver." (2 Cor 9:7)
