FRIAR'S MIND

The latest crisis in the Persian Gulf reminds us of how terrible the situation is in the Near East. The continuing standoff in Israel, Bosnia and Northern Ireland, and the terrible economic problems in Russia make us very glad we are not there. Living in America, we are incredibly fortunate.

God has been good to us, beyond our hopes and beyond our deserving. This week we offer thanks as a nation and a people. We offer thanks as a community and a parish. We offer thanks as a family.

We usually trace our Thanksgiving celebration back to the Plymouth Colony and the year 1621. Hispanic Americans claim the first Thanksgiving celebration in this country happened in 1589 near El Paso on the Rio Grande. It doesn't matter which we would like to look back to. They both were typical of times when people were more religious and more pious. They weren't ashamed to acknowledge publicly that their good fortune was God's gift, not just luck.

That's what we need to do. And we have a lot more reason. May our Thanksgiving dinner be a foretaste of the eternal banquet in God's kingdom. And may our gratitude be the beginning of an eternal prayer of thanks in heaven.

Frs. Earl & Gilmary

ARCHDIOCESAN ENDOWMENT CAMPAIGN

NEW PARISH CENTER - I.C. TOMORROW

The building committee met last Tuesday with the architects, the mechanical and the electrical engineers to refine plans for the new parish center. If we incorporate all our present plans in the building, the cost will be $2,200,000. We must now determine, in view of the amount we have on hand and our projected income, the amount and schedule of debt we can realistically finance.
