FRIAR'S MIND

WHAT ARE YOU WAITING FOR?

Today is the first Sunday of Advent. "Advent" means "coming." The season of Advent is a time of waiting for the coming of the Lord. So what are you waiting for?

The obvious answer would be "Christmas." Advent is the liturgical season to prepare for the celebration of Christmas. Yet Christmas is not the commemoration of the birth of Christ as an historical event, but as a saving event. The proper celebration of Advent and Christmas is itself a saving event, a moment of grace, which brings about the coming of Christ into our hearts. That is one thing we are waiting for.

Since the coming of Christ in the flesh is primarily a saving event, and salvation will be complete only at the final coming of Christ, Advent is a time of waiting not only for the Birth of Christ, but also for his Second Coming in power and majesty at the end of time. That is something else we are waiting for.

Christ has come once; He will come again. Indeed He has never left, but is continuously present in His Church. For this reason, Advent is a celebration of His first coming, His presence now in the midst of the Church, and anticipation of His final coming when he will complete the work of Redemption.

Advent has a past, a present and a future. We are waiting now in the "time between." Between the past historical Christmas and the future Second Coming of Christ His present coming in grace is constantly taking place. The church not only prepares to welcome Him at Christmas or to greet him at the end of time. It rejoices that the Lord is now in our midst. We await his coming today.

During Advent we are to "prepare the way of the Lord." We best recall his coming on the first Christmas and await his second Coming by living the mystery of Christ in the present. By faith He is reborn in our hearts.

So what are you waiting for?
Frs. Earl & Gilmary

NEW PARISH CENTER - I.C. TOMORROW

The building committee is now wrestling with the design versus the cost of the new parish center. If we incorporate all our present plans in the building, the cost will be $2,200,000. We must now determine, in view of the amount we have on hand and our projected income, the amount of debt we can realistically finance. This will also affect the schedule for construction and retiring the debt.
