In preparation for the centennial year of St. Peter Church (built in 1883), Fr. Kevin Gormley, the twelfth pastor, with the Frank Grimaldi Company of Kansas City, Mo., renovated the Church to conform to the directives of the Second Vatican Council. The present Altar of Sacrifice was constructed from sections of the former communion rail in 1982. That same year, the baptismal font, purchased in 1888, was restored to its original beauty. The tabernacle, on the left side of the sanctuary, rests upon an ornate walnut base and is crowned with gothic pinnacles from the old pulpit. The fourteen Stations of the Cross, imported from France in 1884, each having a weight of 200 pounds, were restored in 1982. The church structure, built at a cost of $40,000 in 1883, was renovated one hundred years later at a cost of $510,000. The Most Rev. Michael F. McAuliffe, S.T.D. second bishop of Jefferson City, presided over the Centennial Mass and related celebrations on Sept. 25, 1983.
One special distinction for St. Peter Church: it claims the spiritual parentage of three area parishes. Immaculate Conception Catholic Church (1913), and The Cathedral of St. Joseph (1959), both, of course in Jefferson City; and St. Andrew Catholic Church (1974) in Holts Summit.
St. Peter has also been home to countless families over the years and the scene of numerous religious and social occasions. St. Peter claims two bishops, close to 25 priests, some 70 sisters, and about three brothers and four permanent deacons from its membership.
