History of St. Catherine of Siena School

St. Catherine of Siena School began in September 1965, in the church basement which had grades 1 & 2 with a total of 70 students. Sister Gregory, who taught 1st grade and Sister Antonia who taught 2nd grade were from El Salvador, Central America. They were memebers of the Oblates of the Sacred Heart. These Sisters were brought to the Camden Diocese by the Most Reverend Celestine Joseph Damiano, Archbishop-Bishop.

These Sisters staffed St. Catherine of Siena from September 1965 - June 1976. In September 1976 the school was staffed by the Franciscan Sisters of Syracuse, New York.

Each year a grade was added as the class of '72 moved up. Then in 1969 the Social Hall with five classrooms was built and in 1970 the upper grade wing was added to the building.

Academic Program

The academic program at St. Catherine's follows guidelines recommended by the Diocese of Camden. There exists a built-in flexibility within these guidelines and emphasis in certain areas varies accordingly in different grade levels.

Each classroom is equipped with its own library. Each Classroom has a half hour library period each week

Each classroom is computer equipped. Computers are not taught as a separate subject but are used as teaching aids or remedial tools. Hopefully our children will realize the great potential computer technology offers, understand its limitations and realize that the human mind is after all the greatest computer over created.

Philosophy

St. Catherine is a living community, dedicated to proclaiming the Gospel message of Jesus Christ and translating that proclamation into action

We believe that each child is a unique gift of God entrusted to us for a time. We see the role of the school as one of cooperation withthe parents to awaken the potential of each child for his full development; spiritually, intellectually, psychologically, socioculturally, and physically - as part of God's plan for creation. To this end we seek to inculcate in the child a belief in the doctrine and values of his Catholic - Christian heritage, and we endeavor to promote in him concepts of self-discipline, personal responsibility, diligent scholarship and service to the local and world community of man.
