The Mission of the
Basilica of St. Mary of
the Immaculate Conception

The Mission of Saint Mary's Catholic Church, in general, is the same as that of any Catholic Faith Community -- to proclaim and live the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ. This proclamation of the presence of the crucified and risen saviour, is made primarily through worship, fellowship, and service. This historic parish seeks to bring the word of the gospel to all, regardless of race, language, or culture.
The location of the parish in urban downtown Norfolk and the make-up of it members, provide specific direction to the continuing efforts to accomplish this overall mission. The concerns of the parish for the plight and the needs of the underprivileged, the homeless, the hungry and the unemployed is well founded. Also as a predominately black, socially, and economically diverse parish, it is considered important that this mission reflect the needs for spiritual growth, emotional and educational development and Christian fellowship through the unique gift of black cultural heritage. For as Pope John Paul II said, "Your black cultural heritage enriches the church and makes her witness of universality more complete. In a real way the church needs you, just as you need the church, for you are a part of the church and the church is part of you."
Saint Mary's Academy, like Catholic schools in general, has a special place in the life of the parish community and in the accomplishment of the mission to spread the gospel. The parish desires that the strength of this very important educational component be maintained and that its alignment with the mission of the parish be continued.
The affirmation of the parish to the accomplishment of this mission, is exemplified by the dedication and commitment of the individuals, committees, and organizations that comprise the parish.
