School Merger

Representatives from the SDS and St. George Athletic Associations met recently to discuss challenges each association is currently facing. Fr. Jack Seifert of SDS and Fr. Tom Haley of St. George were then presented with recommendations for an athletic partnership. The partnership has been approved by all.

Both athletic associations will remain as their own entity, however, both parishes have agreed that shared usage of the facilities located at St. George is key to the success of both parishes and athletic associations. It was also agreed that efforts will be made to utilize players from each school to complete rosters prior to going to the South County pool.

Facility Agreement
Each parish will claim St. George fields and gym as home field in all sports. Fields and gym will be available for practices for all teams. SDS will be allowed to use the gym for other parish events at a reduced rate.

People Power Needed
To make this partnership thrive, volunteers will be needed to help maintain the facilities as well as working in the concession stands. Both parishes agreed upon the following.

Concession stand duty will be required for all families participating in sports. Per sport season, each family will work in the concession stand for each child playing. Example - if you have two children participating in soccer, you will be required to work two times during the soccer season. There will be an increased deposit to cover both uniforms and concession duty. If the uniform is returned at the scheduled return date and participation in concession duty is completed, the deposits will be returned. Many volunteers will be needed to help maintain the facilities and for specified field clean up days.

Annual Soccer Tournament

Both parishes will partner in the annual August soccer tournament, previously hosted by St. George. Eighth grade class will benefit from a Barbeque fundraiser during the month-long soccer tournament. The athletic associations will front the money to purchase supplies. SDS teams will be able to participate in the tournament at no charge.

When Agreement Begins
The agreement will begin with the 2004 soccer season signups that will occur in mid-May.

Further information will be communicated as this partnership evolves. In the meantime, you may address your questions to the following people.

Doug Richard, SDS Athletic Director - 832-6720
Craig Pestka, St. George Athletic President - 631-7757

Both associations are very excited about this partnership and look forward to an ongoing relationship to build the strongest youth sports program possible for the children of St. Dominics and St. George.
