Mary, Help of Christians Bulletin
September 7, 1997
TWENTY-SECOND SUNDAY OF THE YEAR
1) Deuteronomy 4, 1-2. 6-8
2) James 1, 17-18. 21-22. 27
3) Mark 7, 1-8. 14-15. 21-23
Adults realize that they are responsible for their own actions. It is
curious to note, however, how ready we are to assign blame for problems to
factors outside of ourselves: "I don't work to my full potential because
nobody at the office does." "The government expects you to cheat on your
taxes--they even budget for it." "I have a great deal of patience, but he
would try the patience of Job." On the other hand, we are more than
willing to see our goodness as our unique possession: "That place couldn't
stay in business if I didn't work there." "None of the other kids' parents
take the time to keep the program going." The truth is that sin is our
choice, not a compulsion from outside (3). As for the good: "Every
worthwhile gift, every genuine benefit comes from above..." (2). When we
busy ourselves with the commandments and statutes of the Lord (1) we
displace the tendency toward evil from our schedules. Stewardship includes
what we make of ourselves as well as what we do for the community.
Next Sunday the readings will be: 1)Isaiah 35, 4-7; 2)James 2, 1-5;
3)Mark 7, 31-37.
