Mary, Help of Christians Bulletin
September 7, 1997
TWENTY-THIRD SUNDAY OF THE YEAR
1) Isaiah 35, 4-7
2) James 2, 1-5
3) Mark 7, 31-37
Faith can become horribly sterile. We worship in tidy spaces. We pray
in goodly order. We keep religion in its place, and we like everything in
our religion to be predictable. Change unsettles us. How sad then, that
Jesus is about change in so much of the gospel--and not always tidy change.
Jesus heals the deaf man with the speech impediment using spit and groans--
hardly tidy (3). What we are about in our religion is bringing the sublime
to the ridiculous. Appearances just don't matter. The unkempt, the
handicapped, the troublesome--these were the people surrounding Jesus.
There are our brothers and sisters in the Lord. James (2) reminds us that
rich or poor, well-dressed or shabby we must show no favoritism. In the
beginning God created the heavens and the earth. Our life takes place in a
world touched by the stars and the dust. To maintain our perspective we
must focus on the Lord.
Next Sunday the readings will be: 1)Isaiah 50, 4-9; 2)James 2, 14-
18; 3)Mark 8, 27-35`.

Preparing for the Jubilee Year 2000
Then Jesus said, "Father, forgive them, they know not what
they do." (Lk 23:34)
"Lord, if my brother sins against me, how often must I forgive him? As
many as seven times?" Jesus answered, "I say to you, not seven times but
seventy-seven times." (Mt 18:21-22) As a disciple of Jesus, how do I
respond to the challenge to forgive those who have hurt me?
