TWENTY-FOURTH SUNDAY OF THE YEAR

1) Isaiah 50, 4-9
2) James 2, 14-18
3) Mark 8, 27-35
"What good is it to profess faith without practicing it?" (2). One of the risks of "charity" is that it makes us feel "good" but not necessarily "responsible." In its truest manifestation, stewardship and care for neighbor are not options but obligations. At times the fulfillment of God's will for us is expensive. The expense is not just a matter of financial concern. At times the cost is life itself. It is a hard truth. When Jesus first tried to explain to his apostles that the Messiah must suffer and die Peter tried to dissuade him. Jesus upbraided Peter and told him that he was "not judging by God's standards but by man's!" (3). Our quest to be good stewards of God's many gifts to ourselves means sacrifice. The end of the quest, however, is everlasting life.
Next Sunday the readings will be: 1)Wisdom 2, 12. 17-20; 2)James 3, 16--4, 3; 3)Mark 9, 30-37.

Next Sunday is St. Vincent de Paul Sunday. Our MHC Green Garden has been providing produce all summer for the St. Vincent families, but now its time for the rest of the parish to help. Please bring surplus crops from your garden to any Mass next weekend. Place them in the bed of a red Ford pickup marked MHC Green. It will be parked next to the handicap spots. If you have time after Mass, please visit our garden. It's just by the back gate across from the storage building.
MHC Green get together, Thursday, September 18, 7:00 PM, School All Purpose Room. If you are interested in gardening, nature and environmental justice issues, we would love to have you join us. Parish garden planning will be discussed.

STEPHEN MINISTRY

The house echos...They are all scattered now--off to college or in an apartment of their own...It's hard to cook for just two again. While you are glad they are becoming independent, you still miss them...Sometimes it hurts terribly. A Stephen Minister can help you sort through your feelings at this time. Call Anne Rusen at 879-8803.

Preparing for the Jubilee Year 2000

Then Jesus said, "Father, forgive them, they know not what they do." (Lk 23:34)
"Lord, if my brother sins against me, how often must I forgive him? As many as seven times?" Jesus answered, "I say to you, not seven times but seventy-seven times." (Mt 18:21-22) As a disciple of Jesus, how do I respond to the challenge to forgive those who have hurt me?
