TWENTY-EIGHTH SUNDAY OF THE YEAR

1) Wisdom 7, 7-11
2) Hebrews 4, 12-13
3) Mark 10, 17-30
Detachment from the "things" in the world is a difficult if not impossible goal. It is not enough to fulfill the commandments which enjoin us to avoid what is wrong (3). We must be willing to let go of all that we possess in order to follow the Lord. But all of us like to hedge our bets. We like to keep a little in reserve "just in case." Our charge as stewards, however, is to use all of our master's many resources -- every last gift-- in service to others. Jesus gave everything he had, even his life, to us when our poor lives were in the possession of death. If we give our lives in service we will not die, but others may come to life. If we chose to give up the common conception that "the more we give up the less we have," we will begin to find countless wealth. "Beyond health and comeliness I loved her, and I chose to have her rather than the light, because the splendor of her never yields to sleep. Yet all good things together came to me in her company, and countless riches at her hands"(1).
Next Sunday's readings will be: 1)Isaiah 53, 10-11; 2)Hebrews 4, 14- 16; 3)Mark 10, 35-45.

Preparing for the Jubilee Year 2000

I say to you, if two of you agree on earth about anything for which they are to pray, it shall be granted to them by my heavenly Father. For where two or three are gathered in my name, there am I in the midst of them. (Mt 18:19-20)
How aware am I that when I gather with others in Jesus' name, he is present with us?

Offering

WORLD MISSION SUNDAY

Next weekend, we will celebrate World Mission Sunday with special prayers at Mass and with our financial support for the missionary work of the Church.
With this support through the Propagation of the Faith, we will help people around the world to hear about Jesus; to experience His love in their daily lives through the service of missionaries; and, with God's grace, come to live in the faith that brings us to the Eucharist today. With our World Mission Sunday offering, we will support the work of the Home Missions of our country as well.
World Mission Sunday gives us a matchless opportunity to carry out our responsibility for the worldwide mission of Jesus. Please be as generous as possible with your prayers and offerings.
