Mary, Help of Christians Bulletin

THIRTIETH SUNDAY OF THE YEAR
1) Jeremiah 31, 7-9
2) Hebrews 5, 1-6
3) Mark 10, 46-52
It must be hard to be a newborn infant. When we are first born we have
no names for the images which come to our eyes. Because we have no
experience to draw on we can't really say where one image begins and
another ends. Though infants can see, they are really blind by any measure
of sense linked to sight. Eventually we grow up and make some kind of
sense out of the information from our senses. Jesus is the ultimate cure
for blindness (3). If we are willing to work each day to see through the
eyes of Christ we will one day come to understand. We will learn to see
beyond suffering. We will see beyond death. Before that can happen,
however, we must first call out to the Lord (3). Our calls will be most
effective if they are accompanied by a way of life patterned after the life
of him who we seek. Our responsible use of God's blessings gives us the
perspective we need to begin to discern the Jesus we seek.
Next Sunday's readings will be: 1)Deuteronomy 6, 2-6; 2)Hebrews 7,
23-28; 3)Mark 12, 28-34.

STEPHEN MINISTRY
Stephen Ministry Training classes will begin in January, 1998. A
morning or an evening session will be offered depending on sign-up. Call
Anne Rusen, 879-8803, for information.
We need "male" Stephen Ministers. When we match you in a one-on-one
caring relationship, it is done male-to-male, female-to-female. At the
present time we have had to go to other parishes to get a male Stephen
Minister. Can you help us...is God calling you?
LEARN THE NEW CATECHISM
Trivia Question:
What does "transubstantiation" mean?
Do you really know all you want to know about the teachings of the
Catholic Church? A small group of parishioners gather on the 1st and 4th
Tuesdays of each month from 6:00-7:30 PM in St. Francis Hall to explore
various aspects of church teaching. We use The Catechism of the
Catholic Church as our resource. Deacon Max is a regular attendee, so he
also serves as a guide. Lessons are independent, so regular attendance is
not mandatory, and reading is minimal. We would welcome more questioning
people in our group.
For answer to today's trivia question, read paragraphs 1373-1381 in
the Catechism and/or join us this Tuesday, October 28 in St.
Francis Hall for "How Real is the Real Presence?" For information, or
to obtain a guide book call Molly Collinsworth, 879-3148, or Anne
Rusen, 879-8803.
Preparing for the Jubilee Year 2000
I say to you, if two of you agree on earth about anything for
which they are to pray, it shall be granted to them by my heavenly Father.
For where two or three are gathered in my name, there am I in the midst of
them. (Mt 18:19-20)
How aware am I that when I gather with others in Jesus' name, he is
present with us?

PARISH LIBRARY
Parish Library Book Review: "The Apostle, A Life of Paul,
by John Pollock. Who was St. Paul? What was he like? This book is a
personal encounter with a great apostle that will move your soul." Thank
you, Mary Ryan, for this book review. The book is available in our Parish
Library along with a wide variety of other books, audio and video tapes for
you and your family to enjoy.
The library is located in St. Francis Hall and is open on Sundays from

subjects, including special ones for Teens and Children.

children's book on the Beatitudes. This is a great series for children if
anyone is interested in donating books. "Family Video Guide"
published by "Preview Family Movie & TV Review". A great guide for
families interested in what their children rent at the video stores or
purchase with their own money. The Ciaravolo's also donated the September,

WORLD MISSION SUNDAY
Thank you for your missionary spirit!
On World Mission Sunday, members of our parish offered generous help, out
of faith and love. This support is a blessing for missions throughout the
world that depend on support through the Propagation of the Faith, as well
as for missionary work here in the United States. Thank you and
please continue to pray for God's blessing on missionaries. We are
in their prayers.
School News
MHCS has begun the first part of the new Catholic School Accrediting
Process by establishing a steering committee and subcommittees which will
undertake the task of conducting a self-study of the entire school
curriculum.
This process is a self-improvement project for the school. Identifying
areas of and strategies for growth, and designing them for immediate, short-
or long-term implementation is one of the benefits of the process and is a
major factor in the development of the school improvement plan which is
presented for accreditation.
This self-evaluation is done by the school community, involving all
faculty and administration, and other elements of the school community
where appropriate: the pastor, staff, parents, students, business and
community representatives, and diocesan personnel. The very activity of
the study should produce improvement. As a result of the mutual effort and
cooperation necessary for the study, all members of the school community
will have a better understanding of the total program of the school.
Interested parishioners or school parents who would like to volunteer
time on these committees are asked to call the School Office (878-9152) if
you are interested. Thank you for your support of this very important
school project.
October 31st marks the end of the First Quarter. Report cards go
home on November 7th.
