THIRTY-FIRST SUNDAY OF THE YEAR

1) Deuteronomy 6, 2-6
2) Hebrews 7, 23-28
3) Mark 12, 28-34

It is, of course, a requirement of Canon Law that members of the Church support the work of the Church through their offerings. Membership has its responsibility, and yet, if the Church were simply some huge "club" which require "dues" of its members it would hardly be worth maintaining. After all, what do you get for your dollar when you give to the Church? A dollar given to the Church may only get you a request for another dollar. The commandments demand that we avoid evil (1,3), but the precepts of the community of faith, following the example of Christ (3) demand that we do positive good for our neighbor. Our obligation to support the Church is part and parcel to our obligation to "go out to all the world and tell the good news." Our contribution is a blessing which allows us to serve our neighbors physical, emotional and spiritual needs. We give because we love God. We give that we may make real our love of neighbor.
Next Sunday's readings will be: 1)1 Kings 17, 10-16; 2)Hebrews 9, 24- 28; 3)Mark 12, 38-44.

STEPHEN MINISTRY

We need "male" Stephen Ministers. When we match you in a one-on-one caring relationship, it is done male-to-male, female-to-female. At the present time we have had to go to other parishes to get a male Stephen Minister. Can you help us...is God calling you?

LEARN THE NEW CATECHISM

Trivia Question:

Another name for the sacrament of confessions is:

a.sacrament of conversion, b.sacrament of penance, c.sacrament of

forgiveness

Do you really know all you want to know about the teachings of the Catholic Church? A small group of parishioners gather on the 1st and 4th Tuesdays of each month from 6:00-7:30 PM in St. Francis Hall to explore various aspects of church teaching. We use The Catechism of the Catholic Church as our resource. Deacon Max is a regular attendee, so he also serves as a guide. Lessons are independent, so regular attendance is not mandatory, and reading is minimal. We would welcome more questioning people in our group.
For answer to today's trivia question, read paragraphs 1420-1498 in the Catechism and/or join us this Tuesday, November 4 in St. Francis Hall for "Forgiveness Heals People". For information, or to obtain a guide book call Molly Collinsworth, 879-3148, or Anne Rusen, 879-8803.

Preparing for the Jubilee Year 2000

"It was not you who chose me, but I who chose you and appointed you to go and bear fruit that will remain, so that whatever you ask the Father in my name he may give you." (Jn 15:16)
How productive am I (how much fruit do I bear) in living my faith? What positive difference do I make in my family, neighborhood, workplace, civic community, and larger society?

A few weeks ago a commercial company distributed fliers advertizing their services. They were trespassing when they did so. We did not and do not permit commercial companies to place fliers on windshields.

MINISTRY 2000

The purpose of the Ministry 2000 Planning Process is to develop recommendations to the Archbishop as to how the Dayton Deanery, exclusive of the inner Dayton parishes, can best meet the challenge of the steadily decreasing number of priests, while satisfying the ministry needs of the Deanery.
Phase One of the Process was completed with Archbishop Pilarczyk's favorable review of that Phase's Conceptual Planning Report. The Archbishop emphasized that the Holy Spirit is calling the Church to enter into a new era as evidenced by: 1)the increasing ministry expectations throughout the Church; 2)the decreasing number of priests and 3)the increasing capability of the laity to provide various ministries.
The Report discussed the demographics of the 21 parishes involved, various parish issues, parish resources, parish needs, common values and three regional issues: 1)How to develop a more cooperative relationship between parish communities?; 2)What should the criteria be for assigning priests to parishes (or conversely, to take priests away from other ministries?) and 3)How do we "tie-in" to the plan developed by the central Dayton parishes?
The Phase Two Strategic Planning Process has begun with a survey of the various parish facilities. This will be followed by a determination of the Deanery's ministry needs, the ministries currently being provided and models as to how the needed ministries will be provided - including consideration of maintaining independent parishes, sharing facilities, staff and ministries among various parishes and, perhaps, consolidating certain parishes.
Mary, Help of Christians parishioners will have ample opportunity to review and comment on the Phase Two Plan before it is presented to the Archbishop in mid-1998. MHC's Parish's representatives on the Ministry 2000 Task Force are Robert Panella and Susan Takacs.

All Souls Day

November is the month dedicated to the Faithful Departed. The Book of Our Dead has again been placed in the main vestibule of the church. You may enter the names of your deceased loved ones who have died this year in this book of remembrance. Also, all parishioners are invited to the Vespers service for Departed Souls on Sunday, November 2nd at 7:00 PM in church.

School News

The end of the calendar year means tax time for all of us--not a very pleasant thought, but one we can't avoid. Please keep in mind that any contributions made to Mary, Help of Christians Church or School are fully tax deductible (excluding tuition). Parishioners and school parents are encouraged to donate to the Adopt-A-Student Program and the Information Technology Plan (ITP). The Adopt-A-Student program helps to cover tuition costs by assisting families in need. The school has made great strides in accomplishing the goals set forth in the ITP with the set up of the new school computer lab, but many funds are needed to continue with this project. (Checks can be made payable to MHCS Information Technology Plan.) Your tax-deductible help for both of these worthy causes is needed and very much appreciated. Thank you.
First quarter report cards distributed November 7.

Vote!

With the November elections near we urge all parishioners to exercise the right to vote. In our world if we don't use it, we may lose it. It is also time to remind all that the parish neither endorses nor opposes candidates. We may on occasion take a position on issues.
