from the Pastor's Pen

Coming back from ten days away, there was quite a stack of mail to go through. Thought I'd let you know about some of it. Got a letter from the Archbishop about a team to attend the upcoming Parish Self-Review process meeting. Request for bulletin space about the CYC Youth Conference at St. Mary's. Letter from the School Office downtown about our faculty for the coming year. Offers from Liguori Press and a video company about materials on Lent, some for the weekly bulletin (would anyone want them? Use them?) Newsletter of the Missouri Bishops on their efforts to influence laws on prisons, abortion, and school tuitions. Request for bulletin space for Rosary on the anniversary of Supreme Court abortion decision. Newsletter from Kenrick-Glennon Seminary. Offers for computer software on foreign languages, bible programs, and graphics. Letter from Arch. Committee on Women in the Church to promote their role. 130-page book from a group in the church concerned about those who dissent from Church teaching, especially on women's role. Letter from Aldermanic President Francis Slay congratulating us on our new sign. Letter from Archbishop Rigali congratulating and thanking us for making our goal in the Returning God's Gifts endowment. Requests for bulletin space about Bob Kuban dance at St. Anthony's, Retrouvaille retreat for troubled marriages, and Natural Family Planning. Large packet from the Archbishop on his response to teachers' salary negotiations, with date in 3 days for an afternoon meeting on it. Brochure from Today & Tomorrow Foundation which supports our school, a report from 1997. Several packets of Sr. Louise's good, detailed schedules and plans. Oh, and my state and federal tax books. Just a cross-section of the things that go across my desk and the rectory office over a week or so.

Open Your Hearts
As our government officials discuss budget cuts in their politically-oriented way, and attach names & titles to those who will be affected, it can become increasingly easy to lump the poor into categories with generic sounding names. People are easier to ignore that way.
Ever since Parish Help began, Resurrection parishioners have shown a keen awareness of the problems of the needy. We hope the "plain labels" don't change that. The poor we have always with us. They are still the same flesh & blood individuals who try to hold on to minimum wage jobs, care for families, live on very little, struggle to pay bills, and often don't make it through the month without running out of food.
WE ASK YOU TO CONTINUE to be generous as we all work through changing times.
NO MORE ADULT CLOTHING, PLEASE. We have no space. However, we will accept clean usable children's clothing.
FOOD WISH LIST: dry cereal, instant cereal, p.b.& j., tuna, sugar, ham. Helper, canned pasta.
