from the Pastor's Pen

A few words are in order about the Archbishop's new plan for Catholic school teachers' salaries. As you know, questions have been raised about the salaries, the teachers' say in setting them, and the possibility of a union to bargain for the teachers. The Archbishop set up a commission headed by a Ph.D. in education and including many teachers, including the most vocal spokespeople. Recently the Archbishop accepted the commission's recommendation and established the "New Partnership", a committee of 20 to set and review teachers' salaries. Ten of the members will be teachers who will be voted in by their peers. The plan is to meet 3 goals of concern to the teachers and the diocese: increases in salary, growing toward comparison with Archdiocesan High School teachers; participation by teachers in setting the salary scale; and protecting the mission of the Archdiocese in keeping our schools viable for parishes. The archbishop made the point that the Church promotes unions in business matters to share profits with employers and has unionized workers here in its own businesses, as in the cemeteries. However, since our schools are not profit-making and are not businesses, teachers are free to form or join a union but this is not the group that will be negotiated with for salary revision. It seems sensible also that, since those pressing for a union do not represent a majority of our teachers, the New Partnership committee with elected teacher reps will do this. The central aims of the teachers's spokespeople-increase in salaries and in participation-are in the process in a new way. I have been working with our school teachers who have concerns about these things and also do not like heavy-handed tactics. We all need to be very grateful to our dedicated teachers, and committed to just wages for them and ever-improving conditions and opportunities. I believe the Archbishop's partnership commits us to join them in these goals.
