from the Pastor's Pen

It looked like people enjoyed filling out the Parish Survey last Sunday. You certainly took it seriously! As you should have, and as it will be taken by myself, by parish leadership, and the Archdiocese.

As I recapped the parish's weekend with the Parish Council Monday night, I was exhausted just thinking about it. It began with the school ski trip (which I also went on) to Hidden Valley Friday, which went right into the beginning of the volleyball tournament, where many of our school parents and kids were gathering. Saturday the tournament went along with the Men's Club Bar-B-Q, which had brisk business all day. Sunday this survey was part of the Masses, with Coffee & Donuts after, where parishioners gave out Marriage Encounter information and the Cubs had a bake sale as the St. Ann Sodality met. All this is a supposedly quiet time of year! It gives me a picture of quite an active parish by a wide range of parishioners. The Parish Review, of which the surveys are a part, will go on foe several weeks now. I think it comes at a good time for us, to take stock of our parish life and programs so they are as appropriate as possible to what we need to be doing right now.

THESE ARE FACTS! 1.) More than half of the hungry in greater St. Louis are children. (Food Pantry Assoc.)
2.)The majority of hungry poor are working poor families.
(Food Research & Action Center.) 3.)The majority of families receiving food stamps depend on food from pantries to supplement their food supplies. (FPA data
& FRAC) 4.) Suppliers of food, and money to buy food are DECREASING.
(FPA, Operation food search & St. Louis Area Food Bank) 5.)Pantries in St. Louis would need twice as much food as they NOW receive to replace food stamps for just 30,000 area residents. 6.)The Federal Government has cut $27 billion in food stamps. 7.)The U.S. Conference of Mayors reports found that requests for emergency food rose 16% during 1997. (Society of St. Vincent dePaul) These food facts should be appalling to all Christians, each of us must do our share to help alleviate hunger.
FOODS NEEDED Cereal, Mac & Cheese, Jelly, Bath Soap, Dish Detergent, Spaghetti, Tuna, canned Meats, Rice, canned Fruit Juice. JAN. STATS Parish Help furnished food to 185 Adults, 178 children for a total of 363 individuals or 122 families. Parishioners donated 218 lbs. of food. Immoculate Heart of Mary donated 140 lbs. of food.
