from the Pastor's Pen

With all the things that are going on, I almost missed a comment on Pentecost, the third great feast of the year and the end of the Easter season. The apostles had been huddled in fear, and then were on the rooftops preaching. Did it happen all at once? Or did some time elapse while they took in the gift of the Spirit and let it change their lives? They lived in an area where there were many different languages, and so many cultures that normally people couldn't understand each other. Does that sound familiar? Have you ever felt like a stranger in your own neighborhood, or in the supermarket aisles, as people of other cultures grow around you? Yet on that first Pentecost, when the apostles spoke, each one could understand their words in their own way. Imagine that happening here! It is meant to. Pentecost was to be a beginning of the Spirit helping the Church to grow throughout the world. Our church and our school continue to take in new members. Fr. Argent, Fr. Jim and I are making plans for how we, as a parish, can undertake a thorough evangelizing in our neighborhood, taking our Catholic faith literally into the streets and making sure everyone around us is welcomed to learn more about our faith in the Risen Lord. It seems to me that there is no better place than the South Side right now to experience a new Pentecost.
Finally, work is beginning on our stone sign for the church lawn donated by Grace Gaedig. The concrete foundation should be in as you read this. In June the limestone blocks will come from Indiana. We also thank Mike Lammert for his work on the front planting areas.
And finally, the yearly Great Day is here!! Our Parish picnic-my second at Resurrection. I was extremely impressed with the work of the Picnic Committee and all the workers last year. Make sure to join in the spirit. I hope able adults give an hour or two of work on the day. And let's invite our friends and family to meet us there, have dinner or a drink and soak up the atmosphere. Look for us on the parade route!
