from the Pastor's Pen

This Tuesday night is the annual National Night Out. The idea is sort of a "take back the streets" program, for residents in all neighborhoods to come out and use their streets, yards, and property to gather and celebrate. In some ways I'm not sure we've needed that so much around here. A good number of our children walk to school; I see many of them playing outside or riding their bikes. I often see parishioners outside as I walk or ride through the parish. But it may be true that, whether it's air conditioning, busy schedules, or the increased use of TV's and VCR's, on the whole we spend a lot more time shut up indoors. I remember a priest at St. Pius not native to the South Side, who was delighted at the time people spent just sitting on their porches, watching the world go by in front of them, and available for visits and talking. This would seem to create community in a natural, leisurely way. The idea of the National Night Out is partly to deter crime by neighbors being visible in their own neighborhood. Maybe it's just a natural South Side tradition come back. We've already heard of some of our blocks having Block Parties that evening. Think about it on your block, or just have a drink out on your porch that night.

BINGO

Come out! Come out! Our prizes and games are called some of the best in the area. Our parish is working very hard to bring off nice evenings. Please support the parish in this way if you like the games or would like to try. At Kolping House, Wednesday at 6:30 p.m. Lighted parking and security.

A C-4 MESSAGE Let your presence be known in your neighborhood by participating in (or organizing) a Block Party on National Night Out, Tuesday August 5th. Your party can be simple or elaborate. For details to register your block with the city, or more information, call Kurt Tarkington at 622-4628.

CLEANLINESS IS NEXT TO GODLINESS, or so our mother's told us. If you watch our wish list, you'll notice that hygienic products are often priority items. We all know how costly these can be. Most of our clients face the hard decision of whether to purchase meat and potatoes or hygienic products. Please think of us next time you purchase soap, toothpaste, deodorants and the like, and pick up an extra item or two for the Parish Wagon.
THE POWER OF PRAYER: Parish helpers pray for our parish, those we help, our many benefactors and for each other. Please pray for us too. It's something we can do for each other. "Whatever you ask for in prayer with faith you will receive"! Matt 21:22
NEEDED FOOD ITEMS Canned meat, tuna fish and salmon, pasta, fruit, pork & beans, corn, peas, string beans, cold cereal, mac & cheese, peanut butter & jelly, plain white rice, Kool-aide lemonade & tea.
