RETURNING GOD'S GIFTS

PROVIDING FOR NEEDS OF OUR RETIRED PRIESTS Through the campaign we support those who have given their lives in service to the Church, our priests. These men lead us on a journey of Faith: they baptize us, our children and grandchildren; we receive First Communion from them; they guide us through confirmation; marry us; and ultimately, prepare us for God's kingdom. We are encouraged and consoled by them during times of trouble and need. In choosing to serve God, they give up many things we take for granted, like our families. Once they retire, those needs remain. RETURNING GOD'S GIFTS is our chance to provide for our retired priests.
THIS WEEK we are looking for volunteers to make a few calls on fellow parishioners. Help and training provided. Sign a card at church today, or call the rectory soon.

from the Pastor's Pen

The words "urban sprawl" have been heard increasingly lately. They refer to the tendency for our area's population to keep spreading out farther and farther, and leave empty or even decaying areas behind. Meanwhile state resources keep providing new services such as roads and sewers, while those already existing may be neglected.
It is this topic which C-4 and other neighborhood organizations of the city and county have highlighted for area-wide reflection this year. Lost in the furor over a princess's tragic death last weekend was an announcement that these groups are hosting 12 "Town Hall Meetings" on the topic of Urban Sprawl throughout the area. I will be helping with the presentation at the South County meeting at Assumption Parish next Wednesday evening. At the core of these discussions is the truth that this is not a "city issue", nor is it to benefit the city at the expense of other areas. Many county areas are now in decline by several criteria, and more will follow if the drift outward continues. Meanwhile we keep spending tremendous amounts of public money on services in new areas. Most of all, the community spirit of the entire area suffers.

A full list of the meetings is on the bulletin board. Please consider attending one of these, and keep reading the notices on this topic important to our area's growth.
