WORKERS NEEDED After sign-ups last weekend and more letters this week, we are still building our group of Campaign Volunteers to visit homes in the next few weeks. A meeting to brief the Volunteer Visitors will be held this Wed., 7 p.m. in the cafeteria. Please call the rectory beforehand if you can help our effort in this way.
HOW CAN YOU PARTICIPATE IN RETURNING GOD'S GIFTS A gift to the RETURNING GOD'S GIFTS campaign - no matter how great or how small - can go a long way. And you may be able to give more than you think you can! By pledging a gift over time, those who contribute to RETURNING GOD'S GIFTS are able to consider giving in greater measure, according to how they have been blessed. For example, did you know that a gift of $2,100 pledged to RETURNING GOD'S GIFTS over a three year period - after an initial ten-percent down payment - is only $1.73 per day? Here is what other gift levels translate to on a daily basis after a ten-percent initial payment: $2,100 gift=$1.73/day, $1,500 gift=$1.23/day.

from the Pastor's Pen

Every parish thrives on a number of unsung people, folks who do things in the background of which most people are unaware. We have had many such people over the years at Resurrection, and we still do-in music, in sacristy & cleaning work, Parish Help & St. Vincent de Paul, athletics, and so on and so on. How can we get to know these generous people, and celebrate their service?

Some churches have a monthly newsletter in which such things can be published regularly. In addition, the newsletter can combine reports of the activities of all the parish organization, groups, and committees. I have enjoyed these publications when I was in a community that had them, and I understand Resurrection had one also not too long ago. We now have a bulk mailing permit which would enable us to mail this out inexpensively. It has been discussed in the Ladies Club and Men's Club. Please let someone in these groups know if you would like it. And while you're at it, come to their meeting! They are each open to any woman or man in the parish.

Speaking of behind-the-scenes people, we've had so many it's dangerous to pick one out. But a new one has emerged in our Bingo Nights at Kolping House. Geralyn Everding has been handling the pulltab efforts since the first week. It's complicated and has to be carefully monitored, and Geralyn has not missed a night, doing her work quietly and pleasantly. We thank her for her gift of time and effort.

Fr. Jim's Anniversary

Resurrection is hosting a celebration of Fr. Jim's 25th Anniversary of Ordination on Sunday, Oct. 12, at the 11 a.m. Mass. A reception will follow in the cafeteria.

AUGUST STATS: Resurrection parishioners donated 736 lbs of food. Parish Help furnished food to 202 adults and 185 children for a total of 387 food orders which served 135 families. Immaculate Heart of Mary donated 83 lbs. of food.
WELFARE CASELOAD DROPPING BUT PANTRIES ARE STILL BUSY.
President Clinton was right! During his recent visit to St. Louis the president noted that more than a million Americans have left the welfare rolls since the Personal Responsibility Act became law last year. Unfortunately, while the number of food stamps and AFDC/TANF recipients has been falling, the number of people seeking pantry food hasn't dropped. In many areas the number of people seeking food has increased by 10% or more this year, this has happened at Parish Help. Pantries all around the metro area report that much of the increase can be traced to the jump in the number of "working poor". As the cover story in the 9/1/97 Business Week notes, most American Families have less income than they did in 1973.
OUR RED WAGON: It only takes a minute to drop a bag of food in our wagon which has become pretty neglected over the summer. We really need the food.
