Rest in Peace

In your charity, please pray for the repose soul of SAMUEL BUTTON father of Michael, CORINNE PFEIFFER sister of Mary Kreiner and AUDREY GROSS, who were buried last week. May their souls rest in peace.

THIRD ANNUAL PRAYER WALK

We will hold our 3rd Annual Prayer Walk today Sunday, Nov. 23, to celebrate and pray for our neighborhood. Leaves from in front of church about 11:45, after 11 a.m. Mass. Route is about 1/2 mile, Spring to Keokuk to Gustine, back to church. (Those unable to walk can remain in church and pray.) And, the Ladies Club is hosting a HOTDOG SOCIAL in the cafeteria afterward!

NEW VOICES

You may have noticed them at some of our recent Masses. Two of our parishioners have offered their talents to sing as cantors with Jim Powers. Rose Schelling at the 5 p.m. Sat. and Rita Ward at the 9 a.m. Sun. will be helping lead the singing for some of these Masses. Both are accomplished and experienced at church cantoring and other choral work. We are very grateful for their ministry.

from the Pastor's Pen

Today's feast of Christ the King has always been important to me. Though we don't use the title of king, the feast proclaims what should be growing in our lives, that Christ is the head of everything we do and of each of our households. It also became the occasion of my installation as pastor here two years ago, and I announced that I intended to help God's kingdom of universal peace and harmony to become more realized in our parish and neighborhood. As Mayor Ed Koch used to say, "How're we doin'?" In these two years-or any other time frame you wish to use-is Christ more dominant in your life, your household? In our parish? Is his influence more evident in your prayer and Catholic Christian action? We will never be "done" with these, but as long as we have this feast we have the chance to grow as members of His kingdom.

Next Sunday begins the beautiful season of Advent. It is likely to be skipped in effect by many. So many Christmas things are up already, but the first two weeks of Advent don't even deal with Christmas directly. We celebrate our longing for the Lord's return, and take note of the emptiness in our lives and our world. Perhaps many people can't stand to face this emptiness, but if we are to experience the true joy of God's coming, we must know the extent of our misery without Him. Be careful not to get caught up in an extended pre-Christmas spirit, so you can enter first into the longing of the ages for the Messiah.

WISHING YOU A HAPPY THANKSGIVING

BLEAK FUTURE For the past 17 years our pantry has been blessed by generous donors from our parish, from some guardian angels, from other parishes, Dan Kirner's talent shows and Parish Help fund raisers. At some critical times in the past (their have been a few) we've managed to furnish food to everyone who came through our door.
From all indications 1998 is going to be a tremendous burden on all food pantries. We see more working poor needing help. Loss of benefits to adults, children & the disabled will swell our client load. It is the children and the elderly that concerns us most, the helpless ones are going to suffer even more. With your continued support and God's Blessing, we will be able to keep our door open for those who need us.

END OF YEAR BLUES?

Last year a young alumnus of Resurrection made a substantial end-of-year contribution to the parish, urged by his accountant to do something to lower his tax status. This turned out to be important to balance our accounts. If you are fortunate enough to be in such a situation, please remember your parish of Resurrection as a recipient.
