from the Pastor's Pen

Being somewhat of a dreamer, I never tire of talking about the early part of the Advent season. The word means "coming", and it is easy to identify it with the feast of Christmas. Actually, though, for many centuries the prayers and readings for the first two weeks refer, not to Christmas, but to the coming again of Jesus at the end of time. It is a state of waiting we are always in, but easily lose sight of. The truth is our world is still not all we would like it to be, or all God meant it to be. We must at times recall the incompleteness we feel about it, and about our own lives. If everything is hunky-dory, we don't need a Savior! And if it is not, we do need him-and we are waiting for his return. We wait in an active way of working to prepare our lives and our world, to be ready for Him to come.
Our third Prayer Walk last Sunday was a delightful event. About eighty of us went on the Spring-Keokuk-Gustine route, singing or just talking about what we noticed as we walk. A new parishioner and a new family of four joined us. In the hot dog social following, connections were made or old ones strengthened. The annual walk is a simple, eloquent statement of our presence in the neighborhood and our love for it.

NEW SOCIAL CONCERNS COMMITTEE

We get regular mail on topics pertaining to issues of social justice, working for peace, and other large-community concerns. It is time for us to form a committee to track these items. It would be distinct from C-4, which has to do with more immediate neighborhood concerns. Anyone interested please call the rectory and leave your name. We could aim for a January meeting.
