Advent leads us to Christ

from the Pastor's Pen

A warning: The season of Advent, as it leads into Christmas, is meant to be a beautiful, quiet, spiritual lead-in to Christmas, to ready us to appreciate Christ's presence in our lives. Doesn't sound very much like it usually goes, does it? It's frustrating for me to see how stressed-out people (priests included) can get this time of year, in a way that takes us far from what it's meant to be. Remember that our culture will not promote the values of spiritual reflection, or working on the bonds of love that unite us. It will be "Do Do Do, Buy Buy Buy," frantic behavior and activity that we will wind up in if we let these forces take us. Find a way for moments of peace and quiet-read the Christmas story in Scripture, or the prophet Isaiah. Spend one dinnertime having each one say what they think the world would be like if God was really in charge of how we live. Spend a little more time before or after Mass to reflect on the Scriptures of the beautiful Advent liturgies. Do the real preparation for Christmas-let Advent and Christmas be what they are meant to be for us.

THANK YOU FROM ALL OF US! Judy Kohler and family would like to express their sincere gratitude for all of your prayers for her mother Betty Rosario. She is home and doing better.

AND IT JUST KEEPS ON GIVING.........

Every year when we trim our beat-up old Giving Tree in the back of church, one of the volunteers comments, "I wish someone would give us a beautiful new tree." We have to remind her that our Giving Tree should never be "beautiful and new." As the story about the Giving Tree goes, the tree gave and gave - even when it seemed like there was nothing left to give. The tree belonged to a little boy who used it and used it. He climbed in it, swung on its branches, played in it, sat under its shade, ate its apples and when he was an old man, came back to sit on its stump.
And that explains the spirit of Resurrection's Giving Tree. By their very nature, Giving Trees shouldn't be allowed to retire and the last thing they want is to be replaced! They just want to keep giving. Parish Help is well aware that Resurrection parishioners embody the Giving Tree. You re the ones who enable it to give. You have been truly generous over the years. God bless every branch of our beat-up old Giving Tree. You truly are the branches.

Turkeys & Hams are gratefully welcomed. Pick-up available.
Adopt-a-family: We will arrange for would-be Santas to adopt a family or individual for Christmas. We will supply you with first names, sizes & a wish list. You do the shopping & bring wrapped gifts with name tags and numbers to Parish Help by Dec. 19. 776-0198.
A heartfelt Thank You to: Our school children who donated 489 lbs. of canned goods; all who donated turkeys and hams; parishioners who donated cash & food on Thanksgiving Day. WE ARE INDEED BLESSED BY YOUR GENEROSITY.
