"Since every man (woman) of whatever race, condition, and age, is endowed with the dignity of a person, he (she) has an inalienable right to an education corresponding to his (her) proper destiny and suited to his (her) ancestral heritage." DOCUMENTS OF VATICAN COUNCIL II.
The philosophy of Catholic Education set forth in the Document of Christian Education, of Vatican II, is the standard for Saint Mary's School in the Diocese of Springfield in Illinois.
We, at St. Mary's School, believe that a child is a citizen to two worlds, that her/his destiny is to live a Christian life now and for all eternity. Since the school is the extension of the home, we believe that a Christian home is best complimented by a Christian school, so that the child live her/his formative years in a God-centered environmental where the same basic values are taught by example as well as by word.
At St. Mary's School the faculty, students, and their parents join the parish priest and parishioners to form a living Christian community in which people are bound together in mutual aid, responsibility and cooperation. Freedom exists within this interaction as the liberty persons grant to each other out of their faith and concern for one another. Such freedom is nourished by mutual respect and appreciation: from it, trust grows and individuality flourishes.
We, at St. Mary's School, believe that our prime educational concern is to offer a value-oriented education, wherein the individual's inherent capacities for self-determination are transformed into habits of action, feeling, and thought. It is our purpose to create a happy learning school atmosphere
wherein the individual may develop into an effective human being, for to be human is to search for life's meaning which in intimately related to the mystery of God most fully revealed in Jesus Christ. We will:
-strive to be a supportive, sharing-caring faculty accept each child for her/his uniqueness
-provide relevant and interesting learning experiences which encourage self motivation
-establish a definite routine which allows for a change of pace when
necessary
-be aware of the child's physical needs
At St. Mary's School, faculty and children mutually engaged in the learning
process are continually in the process of changing and growing, for to learn
is to change, and to experience joy in learning is to delight in life itself, for
learning and life are one.
