ST. ANTHONY OF PADUA 233
Pastor's Column
As we conclude the Week of Prayer for
Christian Unity we focus our attention this
weekend on how we enflesh or manifest or make
plain-and-clear the eternal Word, Jesus Christ, to
others through our efforts at building unity.
We hear in the second reading: "The body is
one and has many members, but all the members,
many though they are, are one body; and so it is
with Christ. ... You, then, are the body of
Christ. Everyone of you is a member of it" (1
Cor 12:12,27).
Human unity has a sacramental quality. When
we work at union with God and harmony with each
other, we give a convincing sign to those around
us that Jesus Christ is really present here on
earth as our savior.
Human unity expresses and brings about the
presence and power of God "to bring glad tidings
to the poor, to proclaim liberty to captives,
recovery of sight to the blind, and release of
prisoners, to announce a year of favor from the
Lord" (Lk 4:18-19).
Human unity, which makes the Body of Christ
happen, brings credibility to the words of Jesus:
"Today this Scripture passage is fulfilled in
your hearing" (Lk 4:21).
How do we achieve this sacramental quality of
unity? Here's a checklist:
Worship: We participate in the Eucharist
all together with one mind and one heart and one
voice as a living organism, praying together,
singing together, conscious of being a unity in
worship.
Volunteerism: We value the power of
unity so much that we give of our time and talent
to make our community strong and healthy and
productive.
Dialogue: We voice with respect and
understanding our affirmation and disagreement,
our opinions and suggestions, to make
communications the glue that bind people together
in community.
Collaboration: We develop a style of
working together that shows that everyone has
something to contribute; no one is excluded, no
one is exclusive.
Outreach: We are sensitive to the ailing
or marginalized members of the community to touch
their minds with understanding, their hearts with
compassion, and their needs with concrete help.
In this way our unity as Church makes Christ
present to our world. This is happening here at
St. Anthony's!

"The body is one and has many members, but
all the members many though they are, are one

followers of Christ we are bound together in one
body, the Church. In order to accomplish Jesus'
mission each member has been given certain
talents. Are you using your talents wisely?
WHAT THE EXPERTS SAY...
about the Gospel of Mark
During the next six weeks of this "ordinary"
or "counted" season we will hear the Gospel of
Mark proclaimed on weekdays. Scholars believe
that Mark is the earliest Gospel written, around
65-70 CE, and was addressed to a people suffering
persecution and hardship under the Romans. In
Mark, we meet the suffering Jesus, one who is
rejected and misunderstood, in spite of all he has
said and done. "Jesus proclaims the necessity of
the suffering, death, and resurrection of the Son
of Man in God's plan." Mark is encouraging his
listeners to take heart: just as they are
suffering persecution for the sake of the Gospel,
as Jesus did, they will also, like Jesus,
experience the joy of the resurrection and the
fullness of God's Kingdom. Brown, An
Introduction to the New Testament

YEAR OF THE HOLY SPIRIT: In preparation
for the Millennium the Holy Father has designated
the three years before 2000 to one of the Persons

to be used throughout this year; it is provided
today at the entrances of the church. Please take
one and use it every day throughout 1998. As
part of our parish's observance of this Year of
the Holy Spirit, we will be offering some special
presentations on the working of the Spirit in our
ordinary lives. Our parish mission, moreover,
will focus on the role of the Holy Spirit
