Pastor's Thoughts

"Hello! My name is Benet, and I will be your table-waiter and foot-washer."
One year ago this weekend I began my pastoring at St. Anthony's with these words in the bulletin (even though I didn't move here till August). And now a year later I stand before you and say "thanks" for everything you are doing to help me count my blessings as a priest and as your pastor.
I am particularly grateful -- and consider myself especially blest -- for four characteristics that I find alive and well here at St. Anthony's.
Liturgical Celebration: We have a very high quality of liturgy in our parish. The planning team, the music ministry, the environment committee, the ministers of Word or Sacrament or service, the sacristan(s), my fellow presiders, the many volunteer workers, and the worshipping assembly -- all give praise and thanks to God in a wonderful way.
Community-Building: I've experience many marvelous examples of people pitching in to make "one body, one spirit in Christ" a real experience, especially at the parish picnic and other social events and fund raisers and through many behind-the-scenes volunteer efforts that contribute to the "infrastructure" of our parish community.
Spiritual Development: Whether RCIA, parish mission, bible study, preparation for sacraments, or programs on the drawing board, the opportunities for spiritual development here at St. Anthony's are limited only by our imagination. I am so pleased with the possibilities created and the potentials realized.
Evangelization and Outreach: We have made great strides in making the smiling, caring face of Christ visible to so many people through either our outreach services or our neighborhood community organization. We are truly bringing the Good News to the poor and marginalized in a person-to-person, hands-on, hope-filled way.
Thank you for making St. Anthony's a light of truth and a beacon of hope in South St. Louis. I'm proud to be your pastor.
--Father Benet OFM

I will be in Newark, Delaware, July 15-19 for the Secular Franciscan National Congress.

"The Lord took me from following my flock and said to me, go prophesy to my people Israel"
(Amos 7:15).
Today's readings are about being chosen and sent. The prophet Amos was chosen by the Lord and sent to use his talents for the people of God. For what have we been chosen? How are we using our talents to serve the people of God?

QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS

Several weeks ago I asked your help in finding a passage in Scripture in which Jesus gives us the directive to "visit him in the middle of the night."
So far I have received a number of responses, each giving me a variety of passages, in hopes of answering my question.
These passages include: Matthew 26:45, Mark 13:37, Mark 14:37-38, Luke 2:37, Luke 12:37-38, Luke 21:36-37, and Luke 22:46.
After looking at the work of various Scripture scholars, I have come to the conclusion that none of the above passages answers my question. (See if you agree with them, and me, or not.)
When we study Scripture, it is important to keep in mind some of the "tools" used by the Church in the interpretation of Scripture, such as the historical background, literary form, and cultural setting of the text. If we fail to employ these "tools" in our search for the answers to our questions, we may miss the message God wishes to speak to us through the Biblical writers.
Thanks to all those who responded. My search continues...

ST. ANTHONY OF PADUA CHURCH AND SCHOOL
ST. ANTHONY MEDICAL CENTER
PARTNERS FOR
TODAY AND TOMORROW

We at St. Anthony's are absolutely thrilled and privileged to benefit from the special partnership that has begun between our parish and St. Anthony Medical Center which shares with us a name, an origin, and a history.

For the next three years, the medical center will provide us with a threefold gift of ultimate generosity:

1. $100,000 per year for mainly resources and improvements in the school building and in the school's curriculum (like a computer lab).

2. donated services in the areas of health-care education and parenting strategies, strategic planning and marketing, community awareness and neighborhood building;

3. direct help in building up the Janice Krus Memorial Scholarship Fund for tuition assistance so that needy children of the parish and the neighborhood can go to St. Anthony's School.

Our patron saint, St. Anthony of Padua, takes on a living face for us in the corporate person of St. Anthony's Medical Center. Look at it this way: the Christ Child that St. Anthony holds is actually every child educated at St. Anthony's School and reared in the Dutchtown South and Mt. Pleasant neighborhoods.

We have this fantastic gift from St. Anthony Medical Center, but, in fact, the school still has a big problem. We need more students! At this moment we have 70 less students registered this year than last year.

So, we desperately need your help!

If you have not registered your children, do so immediately by calling Rose McGill at the parish office.

If you have neighbors with school-age children (they need not be Catholics), then talk to them and let them know about St. Anthony's and the possibility of a tuition supplement.

What good is all this support if we have not enough children to educate?

--Father Benet OFM
