Pastor's Thoughts
Our unity as a parish family is absolutely
essential for journeying to the kingdom of heaven.
As indicated by the Sacred Scriptures, we are
called to holiness as a people, not just as
individuals.
As shown by our liturgical texts, we worship
the Lord as "one body, one spirit in Christ"
rather than as just a collection of isolated human
beings gathered into a single space.
As demonstrated by human experience, we grow
in "wisdom, age, and grace" when we rub shoulders
with each other and combine our diversities with
one another to create "unanimity" (united in
spirit and ideals; see Phil 2:2).
As Jesus points out by word and example in
the Gospels, we evangelize most effectively when
we go forth "two by two" and use our oneness to
make clear to others the presence and power of
Christ.
So, as Catholics, our religious experience is
one of unity, and our religious practice is
one of building community. This is the road
to heaven; any other way is a detour.
We meet Jesus in unity. We receive Jesus in
unity. We share Jesus in unity. We fulfill our
lives with Jesus in unity.
This being the case, there are a number of
changes that need to be made in our parish
community to foster, maintain, and bolster this
building of oneness.
One is in attitude: Through preaching
and teaching we need to become more attuned to our
need to be unity-minded and community-oriented.
Another is in practice: The behavior of
unity is called "stewardship"; this does not
merely pertain to money, but to the sharing of
time and talent for the common good. New
structures will have to be developed to make more
people responsible for building up and
strengthening our parish community.
Thirdly, there is communications: So
many efforts at community-building are sabotaged
by tongue-wagging, back-biting, pouting, angry
silence, and uninformed criticism. I will do
everything I can to open new lines of dialogue and
sharing and to stop those elements in our parish
which destroy our oneness as a parish.
I look forward to your working with me.

"You were taught to put away your former way
of life, your old self, corrupt and deluded by its
lusts, and to be renewed in the spirit of your
minds" (Eph 4:22-23). Stewardship is a way of
life that reflects gratefulness for what we
possess and a generous heart to share these
possessions.
QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS
Q: Are the stained glass windows near the
Blessed Sacrament shrine about events in St.
Francis' life?
A: The two windows immediately to the right
and left of the baldachino are depictions of St.
Anthony at prayer.
There are also two windows on the left wall
of the sanctuary; the first depicts St. Francis
blessing St. Anthony as he prepares to set out on
a missionary journey and the second shows St.
Bonaventure and St. Thomas Aquinas in
conversation.
(N.B. I changed the wording of the original
question to avoid any confusion--There is only
one altar in any church, and that is the
Altar of Sacrifice. All other structures, whether
used for reserving the Eucharist or displaying
statues, paintings, relics, etc., are usually
called shrines.)

STATEMENT OF PRIORITIES
PRIORITY #2
Here is the second priority formulated by
the participants of the Leadership Day with its
action plans (the names in parentheses after each
action plan are those responsible for developing a
workable strategy):
In the next year we need to initiate our own
formal stewardship program of time and talent and
money by
2.1 beginning a parish census (Ken Dames
and Mike Green)
2.2 making the sheets for "Survey of Interests
and Gifts" available to the whole parish
(Jay Doolittle and Betty Krull)
2.3 calling and inviting individuals to
participate in specific activities
(Alberta Stackle and Rosemary Beheiter)
2.4 asking the Finance Council to put together a
strategy for fiscal stewardship (Mike
Mount and Gene Rombach).
Stewardship means much more than money; it is
a way of being of service to one another, to the
larger Church (archdiocese), and to the world
around us as a sign of being the Body of Christ
and as a commitment of living the Gospel of Jesus.
We are stewards of the gift's God has given
us -- our talents and attributes, our resources
and material goods -- for the sake of the common
good.
Stewardship means collaboration with each
other and responsibility to one other as "Church."
We're not isolated individuals in this community.
Because stewardship is so important a part of
our self-identity and activity as "one body, one
spirit in Christ," it becomes a special priority
for our attention and activity in this next year.
Action Plan #1 indicates that we need to know
the spiritual and social needs of everyone who
lives within the parish boundaries.
Action Plans #2 and #3 point us in the
direction of having the parishioners make known
their own talents and interests and capabilities.
The last Action Plan calls us to a new fiscal
accountability to use wisely and effectively what
we have now and will have in the future.
