Pastor's Thoughts
There are three upcoming parish events I want
to highlight and urge you to attend:
ALL-PARISH LITURGY PLANNING MEETING: On
Saturday, September 6, after the 8:00am Mass we
will begin a new series of all-parish liturgy
planning meetings whereby we invite everyone
in the parish to voice opinions about plans and
decorations for Advent and Christmas. We will
talk about where to place the Crib, how to
emphasize the themes of Advent and Christmas,
what's the difference between traditions and
pastoral need, etc. Each time we've held this
type of meeting during the last year, the
attendance drops. I value highly collaboration
and consultation; but, if it is the same this time
(which says to me that the ordinary parishioner
just doesn't care about liturgy planning), these
gatherings will be canceled in the future.
LEADERSHIP DAY: On Saturday, September
13, all those involved in leadership in the parish
will gather together for the morning to follow up
on the June 21st meeting. Those responsible for
devising a strategy will give their reports, and
the group will begin a process for implementing
the action plans to fulfill the priorities set on
June 21st. We strongly encourage all members
of the leadership teams to be present for this
meeting because your input is valuable and your
presence is a symbol of cooperation and
collaboration to make this parish work.
ALL-PARISH MEETING: On Sunday, September
14, between the 8:00 and 10:30 Masses we will
again hold an All-Parish Meeting as we have done a
few times before during this year. The agenda,
however, will be quite different. In the previous
gatherings we have talked about ideas and concerns
that the pastoral staff has surfaced. This time,
though, I would like to have an open forum in
order to answer your questions and face with you
your interests and anxieties. I propose that,
even though we will take queries and comments from
the floor, you make sure you get heard by writing
down your question on a piece of paper, signing
it, and getting it to me before September 14th.
Moreover, please make an extra effort to be
present at this parish-wide gathering.

"Every worthwhile gift, every genuine
benefit comes from above..." (Jas 1:17). A life
of stewardship depends on the realization that
everything we possess is gift from God and belongs
to God. We are all stewards or managers of the
many gifts God has bestowed upon us. Our
challenge as Christians is to make good use of
those gifts.
QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS
Q: Why don't the altar boys (sic) pray and
bow when they serve the priest?
A: The General Instruction of the Roman
Missallays out the roles servers are to take in
their ministry of the altar. They are to take
part in the procession to the altar, assist the
priests in any way required (such as presenting
the book to them), place the chalice and missal on
the altar, assist the priest in receiving the
gifts, and take the chalice, patens, and missal
off the altar after communion (See 143-47).
How they are to do these things is left up
to the individual faith communities, as the
Instruction is silent on these matters.
While there are guides to use in the training
of servers, written by various "experts," that is
all they are--guides. Not all servers minister
the same way in all churches. In some they bow,
in some they don't. In some the servers are
school-aged children and in others they are
adults.
In Poland, the server ministers at the altar
dressed in his (sic) street clothes and just
throws (and I mean throws!) a surplice over them
-- and all the above are perfectly acceptable in
their communities. We also have to keep in mind
that we cannot employ old rubrics in the
celebration of the Eucharist; just as the
celebration has changed, so have the rubrics.

RETURNING GOD'S GIFTS
"What return shall I make to the Lord
for his goodness to me?" (Ps 116:12).
Twenty-six percent of the Archdiocese of St.
Louis' new capital campaign, "Returning God's
Gifts, Sharing our Hope," -- an estimated $14.5
million -- will go toward ensuring parish
viability.
What does this mean?
The interest on $9,750,000 is intended to
provide grants to parishes and elementary schools
facing extraordinary capital projects in areas
where the Catholic population is growing.
The interest on $4,750,000 is targeted to
maintain a vital presence in areas which have
experienced a decline in Catholic population by
helping with the upkeep of parish facilities and
thereby strengthening its evangelization and
outreach efforts to communities in need. This is
where St. Anthony's will benefit from this part of
the endowment.
It's a worthwhile and wise investment in
tomorrow's Catholic and tomorrow's Church.
