"See what you have stored up for yourselves
against the last day" (5:3) remind me of the
statement of Jesus: "Do not lay up for
yourselves an earthly treasure. ... Seek first
[God's] kingship over you, his way of holiness,
and all things will be given you besides" (Mt 6:19,33).
The "wealth" which Jesus asks us to store up
is God's "way of holiness." Let's look at just a
few of Jesus' teachings which constitute the path
of holiness (and, hence, one's passport to the
heavenly realm):
Forgiveness: "If you forgive the faults
of others, your heavenly Father will forgive you
yours" (Mt 6:14).
The Extra Mile: "You have heard the
commandment, 'An eye for an eye, a tooth for a
tooth.' But what I say to you is: offer no
resistance to injury. When a person strikes you
on the right cheek, turn and offer him the other.
If anyone wants to go to law over your shirt, hand
him your coat as well. Should anyone press you
into service for one mile, go with him two miles.
... My command to you is: love your enemies, pray
for your persecutors" (Mt 5:38-41,44).
The Golden Rule: "Treat others the way
you would have them treat you: this sums up the
law and the prophets" (Mt 7:12).
Will of God: "None of those who cry,
'Lord, Lord,' will enter the kingdom of God but
only the one who does the will of my Father in
heaven" (Mt 7:21).
Charity: "Inherit the kingdom prepared
for you from the creation of the world. ... I
assure you, as often as you did it for one of my
least brothers, you did it for me" (Mt 25:34,40).
Sacrifice: "If a man wishes to come
after me, he must deny his very self, take up his
cross, and begin to follow in my footsteps" (Mt
16:24).
The Great Commandment: You shall love
the Lord your God with your whole heart, with your
whole soul, and with all your mind. ... You shall
love your neighbor as yourself" (Mt 22:37,39).

entrance into the reign of God. Does it contain
these treasures and riches?

"Your gold and silver have corroded, and
their corrosion shall be a testimony against you.
See what you have stored up for yourselves against
the last days" (Jas 5:2-3). Materialism is a
powerful influence in today's society. It
encourages us to possess more for our own
individual gain. Whereas, stewardship calls us to
share all that we possess with those in need.
"...The ecclesial community's vitality emerges in
its fidelity to the mission which the Lord
entrusted to his disciples: evangelization.
We are the guardians and messengers of the Good
News. In all its forms the apostolate consists
first of all in transmitting and preaching the
word of salvation, and knowledge of the Word who
is the Way, the Truth, and the Life. ... The
community gathered together must itself be
constantly evangelized: each believer always needs
to let himself be challenged by Christ and to be
converted by listening to the Word which makes
great demands but at the same time is a priceless
gift, for it is the proclamation of salvation,
reconciliation and the victory over death..."
--Pope John Paul II, "The Vocation of the
Parish," January 25, 1997.
MONTH OF OCTOBER: For many parishioners the month of October turns our thoughts to honoring the Blessed Virgin Mary and identifying with the saving mysteries of her Son Jesus Christ through the rosary. To help with this fine tradition, rosaries will be handed out at school to every student, and instructions will be given on how to use this form of prayer. Moreover, we invite the parishioners to check out a book on Mary or on Jesus from the parish library during the month of October to deepen your understanding and your devotion.
SKATING BEGINS on Thursday, October 2. Kids and adults are needed to help on all nights: Thursdays, Fridays, Saturdays, Sundays. Sign up will be September 29, 6-7pm, in the gym. Pass the word! If the long-standing tradition of skating is going to survive, we need you to lend a helping hand. Questions? Call George or Bev after 6:00pm at 752-1698.
THE FEAST OF ST. FRANCIS OF ASSISI will be celebrated with special solemnity on Saturday, October 4, at the 4:30 Mass. Franciscans, Dominicans, and Benedictines from the St. Louis area have been invited to participate. Abbot Leo Ryska OSB of St. Benedict's Abbey in Benet Lake, Wisconsin, will preside at the Eucharist.
Tickets for the John Michael Talbot
Concert on October 11 at 7:30pm will be on sale
after all Masses this weekend.
John Michael Talbot is a world-renowned
Christian singer and composer; his Catholic roots
are deep in the Franciscan tradition. You have
heard or sung his music many times; selections of
his are in our hymnal.
On Sunday, October 12, at 1:00pm everyone is
invited to join John Michael on a silent walk
through the neighborhood to prayer for peace. We
will stop at two churches along the way for
special prayer services.
Mark your calendars and come along!
