Pastor's Thoughts
"God's word is living and effective,
sharper than any two-edged sword. It penetrates
and divides soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it
judges the reflections and thoughts of the heart.
Nothing is concealed from him; all lies bare and
exposed to the eyes of him to whom we must render
an account" (Heb 4:12-13).
Whenever I hear this passage, my mind moves
to a quote from Jesus: "If you make my word
your home, you will indeed be my disciple, you
will learn the truth, and the truth will set you
free" (Jn 8:31-32).
Jesus Christ is the Word (that is, the
exact representation) of the Father
dwelling among us in ways that we can recognize,
respond to, and relate to as human beings.
This Word makes known to us his life and his
mission through his words which come to us
primarily through the Holy Scriptures and also in
other ways like the teachings of the Church, the
shared wisdom of the community, the tell-tale
events of life, and the promptings of one's
conscience.
Our attentiveness to and acceptance of these
words of the Word make us his disciples, make us
Christians, make us authentic followers of Jesus,
make us credible witnesses to God in our world.
How, then, can we expect to be good Christian
people if we do not read and listen to Scripture
on a regular (even daily) basis? How can we
expect to get to heaven if we do not take as
literally as possible Jesus' teachings in
Scripture? How can we expect to be true to
ourselves and feel freedom and joy and peace in
this life if we do not let ourselves be motivated
and formed by Scripture?
When I love and respect someone, I listen to
that person and take seriously that person's word.
I let that word touch me deeply and change my
heart and my mind. In this case, the word of the
Word cuts to the core of my being and challenges
me to look at life from a new perspective and to
act in a renewed fashion. If I were not a person
in love with Scripture, I would not be able to
call myself a Christian.

poor; you will then have treasure in heaven" (Mk

WHAT THE EXPERTS SAY
About the Participation in the Liturgy:
--compiled by Brother Richard OFM
"..Christ instituted the eucharistic celebration
at his last supper with his friends. His purpose
was to provide the Church with a memorial of his
loving death and resurrection: a sacrament of
love, a sign of unbreakable unity, a bond of
charity and justice, all filling us with grace.
The Church wants the faithful, therefore, to find
Christ present at the Eucharist. We're not
present at Mass merely as strangers or as silent
spectators, but we are to take an active part in
the rites, and understand what we're
doing...Because of their baptisms, all the
faithful have both a right and a duty to full and
active participation in the Liturgy.
Participation in the Liturgy can be seen as a
'right' because without it a person would
experience spiritual starvation. It is a 'duty'
because without the Liturgy, Christian people
cannot live the life to which God calls them..."
(cf. 47-48, 14 Constitution on the Sacred
Liturgy).

MISSION SUNDAY 1997
Dear Friends in Christ,
As we celebrate Mission Sunday on October
19th, we are mindful of the 150th anniversary of
our own Archdiocese which we are celebrating next
Sunday as well.
We celebrate the lives of Saint Rose
Philippine Duchesne, Father Peter DeSmet, and the
other missionaries who gave their lives in service
to that early Catholic community that was to
become the Archdiocese of St. Louis.
The young Church in St. Louis also benefited
from the financial support offered by the
Catholics of Europe through the Society for the
Propagation of the Faith.
Bishop DuBourg, so prominent in the early
Church of St. Louis, greatly influenced the
foundress of the Society of the Propagation of the
Faith, Pauline Jaricot.
In fact, one third of her first collection
was sent to Bishop Dubourg for the support of his
mission work.
In more recent years, the Archdiocese of St.
Louis has provided most generously for the work of
today's Missions: The young Churches of Asia,
Africa, and the remote regions of Latin American
depend greatly on our continued generosity.
I ask for your prayers and financial
assistance on Mission Sunday to support our
missionaries who work to establish the Church
where it is not yet firmly rooted.
I thank you in anticipation of your help and,
as always, ask God's blessing on you.
Gratefully yours,
Most Rev. Justin Rigali
Archbishop of St. Louis
The second collection on October 18-19 will be
for the Society of the Propagation of the Faith.
