Pastor's Thoughts
We hear in the second reading that Jesus
"was tempted in every way that we are, yet
never sinned. So let us confidently approach the
throne of grace to receive mercy and favor and to
find help in time of need" (Heb 4:15-16).
These words take me to Jesus' statement in
the Gospel of Matthew: "Come to me, all you
who are weary and find life burdensome, and I will
refresh you" (11:28).
I am aware that some people -- for whatever
reason -- have a hard time relating to Jesus in a
personal and intimate kind of way. There seems to
be some sort of gap or chasm between our human
nature with the limits and foibles and the Second
Person of the Blessed Trinity.
There seems to be a difficulty approaching
the Lord Jesus easily and confidently and readily.
The fact is, however, that, though Jesus is
fully divine, he is also fully human, just
like you and me! He shared the same mental
capacity. He shared the same emotions and
feelings. He shared the same bodily experiences
and functions. He "was tempted in every way that
we are, yet never sinned."
He didn't sin because he had around him some
"magical divine shield" to protect him from the
realities of this world but because he chose
not to sin in exercise of his human conscience and
in response to his Father's love.
He knew sin. He experienced sin all around
him. He knew what the mind and the emotions and
the body and the environment and the influence of
other people can do to our conscience and our
level of temptation. Remember, he was fully
human! Yet, he chose not to sin.
So we can relate to him intimately as our
friend, as our co-sojourner toward the kingdom, as
our model, as our mediator, as our savior who
overcame the negative and destructive influence of
the human condition and invites us to do the same.
We can take to him directly any concern or
problem we have, and he will support us, transform
us, heal us.
Purely because he loves us, he became one
like us, and he invites us to come to him.
--Father Benet OFM

superior of the friar community here -- will be
away this week for the annual superiors'
workshop.)

"Anyone among you who aspires to greatness
must serve the rest; whoever wants to rank first
among you must serve the needs of all" (Mk
10:45). Stewardship is a life of service.
Jesus asks us to commit ourselves to be good
stewards of the gifts entrusted to us, to share
our time, our talents, and our treasures as an
outward sign of love and gratitude we have for
Him.
WHAT THE EXPERTS SAY
About Christian Worship:
--compiled by Brother Richard OFM
"...Christian worship is born of the divine
humanity of Christ, the mystery that we name the
Incarnation, the enfleshment of God's
word...Worship is for God because God is for us;
worship is for us because we are made for
God...Worship is where human beings experience a
unique way the divine and the truly human. We
need worship because it is the way for us to
experience all that is good and holy...If worship
leaves us untouched, it has failed. If however,
the liturgy touches us but does not lead us to
experience the God we worship, then it has doubly
failed, for it has left us self-satisfied and
self-interested. Self-satisfaction and self-interest are the fruit of the tree that grew in
the middle of that ancient garden; this fruit
sometimes looks suspiciously like a golden calf."
