Pastor's Thoughts
This weekend the Church sets aside the
regular formula for the Sunday Liturgy and
celebrates a special feastday: the anniversary
of the dedication of St. John Lateran Cathedral
Basilica in Rome.
Since the Bishop of Rome (the Pope) is the
head of the universal or worldwide Church and
since his cathedral church symbolizes the
oneness or unity of the whole Church, we make
a special effort to commemorate this anniversary
as a way of remembering our own union with the
Church of Rome and of committing ourselves to
manifesting and bringing about more unity in our
corner of the Church.
Union with the Church of Rome is more than
saying "yes and amen" to what the Pope says or
what the Vatican decrees. It means taking on the
"mind" of the Church -- in other words, making the
sacrifice to implement in our personal and
corporate behavior the intent of Vatican II
regarding liturgy, renewal, and evangelization.
Bringing about more unity goes deeper than
just supporting our bingos, fish fries, and BBQs.
It means going out of our way to treat other
people as equals, to acknowledge other's behavior
and customs as acceptable, to interact with people
different from us in a cordial and respectful
manner. It is choosing to put aside those
attitudes and actions that display a sense of
superiority, a perception of exclusiveness, a
feeling that something is "mine" and not "yours."
As I've said before, real unity in a parish
must start with liturgy, must be expressed through
liturgy, and must be brought back to liturgy.
Otherwise, it is not authentic togetherness.
Just as the unity with God the Father and
with all of creation which Jesus achieved was
accomplished by means of his self-emptying on the
cross, so our unity as St. Anthony's Parish can
only be brought about by means of our letting go
of individual agendas and personal preferences in
order to build something bigger and better --
whether in liturgy, in community development, or
in evangelization. And I see it happening every
day!
This is the reality we attempt to capture as
we remember the dedication of the Church of St.
John Lateran and celebrate our being Church both
together with Rome and together with each other.

"Brothers and sisters, you are God's

DID YOU KNOW???
A Brief History of Advent (Part 1)
Advent has always been somewhat confused. It
blends together a penitential spirit very similar
to Lent, a liturgical theme of preparation for the
Second and Final Coming of the Lord (called the
"Parousia"), and a joyful theme of getting ready
for the Bethlehem event. Religious traditions
associated with Advent give expression to all
these themes.
The word Advent (Latin adventus,
"coming") originally described the whole mystery
of the Incarnation. The conception of Jesus was
an Advent, but so was his birth and what will be
his final coming at the end-times. In a more
popular sense, Advent was first associated with
the time of the year now called Christmastime and
finally with the weeks of preparation for
Christmas. More next week...

CHANGES TO OUR WORSHIP AID
Last week I mentioned that we were
changing our subscription with Oregon Catholic
Press to Breaking Bread for 1998.
What is Breaking Bread? It is a
once-a-year publication, and it replaces both
the missalette and the hymnal. Here is how it
will differ with our previous subscription.
. the full text of the Sunday readings and the
responsorial psalm is gone;
. in their place, you will find a summary of
the readings, the psalm refrain for the
responsorial, and some of the weekend
prayers;
. the ordinary parts of the Mass are still
listed in the front of Breaking
Bread;
. the readings and prayers for the weekday
Masses are gone.
But don't get alarmed! Next week we'll talk
about what's staying the same.
